The CW shared a synopsis for Superman & Lois' fifth episode "The Best of Smallville," revealing that Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) is still grappling with the loss of his mother just as "Smallville celebrates its first Harvest Festival since Martha's passing." Episode 5 will also see Clarke overcoming his grief by remembering how Martha inspired all of Smallville.

Martha Kent's death catalyzed Superman and Lois' pilot, leading Clark to bring his family back to Smallville for Martha's funeral. Her death mirrored that of Jonathan Kent's death via heart attack in the pilot's prelude, a moment that homages the character's death in 1978's Superman, starring Christopher Reeve. While in town, Clark and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) discovered that Smallville's bank owns their family's farm after Martha used bank loans to financially assist the neighbors. Rather than sell off the farm, the superhero family chooses to buy the farm and move to Smallville permanently with their teenage sons -- Jonathan and Jordan --  to pay back the reverse mortgage.

Hoechlin debuted as Clark Kent/Superman in Season 2, Episode 1 of Supergirl. Tulloch's Lois Lane debuted two years later in The CW's "Elseworlds" crossover event. Though both characters temporarily died in "Crisis on Infinite Earths, they were revived thanks to Oliver's Spectre powers, which rebooted the multiverse and merged Clark, Lois and Kara's lives with that of Earth-1's Arrowverse characters into Earth-Prime.
