J'onn J'onnz is the last survivor of his planet who became known as the Martian Manhunter after he arrived on Earth, and as one of the most powerful beings in his new home, he soon found himself to be a highly valued commodity among the various superhero teams in the DC Universe.
With the recent release of Zack Snyder's Justice League on HBO Max, Martian Manhunter was added to the cinematic team, which highlighted his ongoing role as a dedicated team player in the DC universe from his work with the Department of Extranormal Operations/D.E.O. to the highest-profile teams, which we'll take a further look at today.
10 Martian Manhunter Joined DC's World Greatest Heroes In JLA
Martian Manhunter might be best known for his work alongside the world's greatest heroes in JLA, which brought together DC's biggest heaviest hitters onto the team for the first time in the 60s before the popular roster would later reform after years as a place for B-list heroes.
J'onnz had been with the team for years before the popular reorganization in the 90s (more on that soon), though his presence on the team took on a defined role as the lynchpin of the team that lasted for years. He was eventually replaced on the team by Cyborg during the New 52, which was replicated on the big screen in Justice League.
9 He Joined The Justice Experience As The Bronze Wraith During The Silver Age
When J'onn J'onnz first arrived on Earth from Mars, it was years in the past and he hadn't yet settled on his identity as Martian Manhunter. However, he still wanted to help people like the other costumed heroes that had begun to pop up during the Silver Age of the DC timeline.
He joined a team of heroes known as the Justice Experience under the name of the Bronze Wraith, though after a civilian died during one of the team's battles, they were killed off by the vengeful Doctor Trap. J'onnz survived and abandoned his Bronze Wraith identity, choosing to work as a human police detective instead.
8 Martian Manhunter Worked With The House Of Mystery's Croatoan Guild of Detection
The House of Mystery is a mystical and semi-sentient residence in the DC universe that grants access to heroes and villains based on needs and undetermined factors, which led to the formation of the Guild of Detection.
Also known as the Croatoans, the team of detectives first formed during the 52 weekly series and included Martian Manhunter alongside heroes like Batman, Detective Chimp, The Question, Hawkman and Hawkwoman, Elongated Man and his wife Sue Dibny, and other detectives over the years that have been summoned by the House of Mystery.
7 Martian Manhunter Briefly Led The Ill-Fated Faction Of Justice League Detroit
After a Martian invasion almost proved successful due to the failure of a busy Justice League, Aquaman organized a new team of heroes who could dedicate all of their time to the team that now operated out of a bunker in Detroit.
Justice League Detroit quickly proved to be ineffectual and Aquaman jumped ship, leaving Martian Manhunter to lead a team of rookies and low-powered heroes. The team suffered a few casualties that led to the disbanding of the team that quickly became a low point in the history of the Justice League.
6 He Briefly Joined Section 8 To Watch Over Them, But Was Too Repulsed Too Stay On The Team
The alcoholic superhero known as Sixpack returned with a new team of "heroes" known as Section 8 during the New 52 reboot, and following a public adventure that brought potentially dangerous grouping of unstable characters, Martian Manhunter asked to join the team of misfits.
Unfortunately, he was not prepared in any way for the unique madness that Sixpack and Section 8 dealt with every day of their lives, and he was driven away in repulsion after witnessing a disturbing bathroom standoff at the team's usual hangout, Noonan's Bar.
5 Martian Manhunter Worked With Justice League International's Worldwide Branch
While the team is best known for the Justice League of America branch, there was a period of time when the group was set up in different embassies around the world as Justice League International which included Martian Manhunter on the roster.
His love/addiction to Oreo cookies first appeared during his time with the team, and when the team was ultimately disbanded and replaced with the A-listers Martian Manhunter was the only member who remained on the roster.
4 He Gathered And Led The Short-Lived Justice League Task Force For The United Nations
During J'onn J'onnz's time with Justice League International, he was called on by the United Nations to put together a strike team of heroes to undertake international missions that were eventually turned into an official faction known as the Justice League Task Force.
Martian Manhunter led a changing roster before he settled on a stable team of young heroes that had matching costumes and famously went on very few missions for the Justice League before they too disbanded.
3 Martian Manhunter Was Brought Back To Life As A Black Lantern Before Joining The White Lantern Corps
The Final Crisis event launched with the heart-breaking death of Martian Manhunter at the hands of Libra and his Secret Society of Super-Villains, though he wasn't gone for long as the Blackest Night event saw a number of deceased heroes reanimated as members of the Black Lantern Corps.
Martian Manhunter was one of the first undead heroes that were placed under the control of the Black Lantern Corps, though he was brought back to life alongside a few other characters as White Lanterns during the event.
2 He Was Demoted To The Justice League United Offshoot After The New 52 Reboot
The New 52 reboot launched with a new version of the Justice League that still focused on DC's seven heaviest-hitters, though Martian Manhunter's spot on the roster was taken over by the former Teen Titan, Victor Stone/Cyborg.
While J'onn J'onnz found a temporary spot on another team (more on that next) during the reboot, he soon returned to a new offshoot known as Justice League United that was originally advertised as Justice League Canada, making Martian Manhunter one of the most international members of the team as well as one of the most alien.
1 Martian Manhunter Briefly Worked Alongside The Stormwatch Organization In The New 52
Following the reality-altering Flashpoint event, the DC universe was merged together with the Wildstorm universe which led to some blended versions of iconic teams that included Stormwatch, a space-based team of meta-powered characters that added Martian Manhunter to the roster during the New 52.
However, Martian Manhunter eventually decided he would be better off working alone and mind-wiped the members of the team so they wouldn't remember his time with Stormwatch, which most fans have also tried to forget over the years.
