Scavengers Studio’s announcement trailer for Season at The Game Awards 2020 has left players wondering about its narrative, gameplay and plot. The trailer has been widely well-received, though, for its stunning visuals and calming atmosphere and has fans excited for a new release with a heavy emphasis on beautiful game art.
Season is so highly anticipated that Scavengers Studio placed among the finalists in Ubisoft’s Indie Series in March 2020. Season looks to be a completely different experience from Scavenger Studios' first release, Darwin Project, a multiplayer battle royale released in January 2020.
Season follows the journey of a young woman who cycles through an unknown world, collecting and documenting artifacts and creatures. She has left her secluded community and is on a path of knowledge and discovery before a tragic event threatens their existence. The character is seen as courageous for her solo journey, and the studio’s goal is to encourage players to live and participate in life before it becomes a distant memory.
In the trailer, the narrative mentions, "We have one season." This has been left open to a wide interpretation by its audience, as one season could refer to one season year-round or a final season left to survive. This is emphasized by the description of time by the young woman, where she states her grandparents lived for 1000 years, while her parents only lived for 100 years and she will only see "one season."
Also shown in the trailer is a range of locations for the player to visit, from the countryside to towns and the wilderness. There is an interesting cultural aspect to the game, suggesting a path of self-discovery for the young woman. The world shown is quite rural and outdated, with the main character also using older styles of recording equipment for her documentation.
Scavengers Studio has described the game's objective as collecting these artifacts and memories before a mysterious cataclysm washes everything away. This suggests the game will not be survival-based, and this "cataclysm" cannot be fought or avoided. The player appears only to be equipped with their documentation tools.
The gameplay of Season is third-person, although the narrative is told from a first-person point of view. The game is described as exploration-based, as players can pause at leisure to document anything that sparks their interest. The player does interact with other NPCs in the game but does not change between characters; players will remain as the young woman throughout the entire story.
Currently, there is no mention of co-op availability, but as Season is a story-rich adventure game, it is unlikely that it will be anything other than single-player. Season remains a PlayStation 5 and Steam exclusive, despite fans taking to Twitter to call for the game to be released on Switch.
Pre-orders for Season have not yet opened, and the game is simply listed as "Coming Soon" on Steam. The game remains in the development stage, while Scavenger Studio's recently opened up applications for game testers via its website. Scavengers Studios have stated the game has been in development for the past four years, but they expect to release it within the next few years.
Developed and published by Scavenger Studios, Season will be available for PS5 and PC. No release date is currently announced.
