Sony has made a change to its theatrical schedule, pushing back Venom: Let There Be Carnage's release date.
The sequel to 2018's Venom will now premiere in theaters on Sept. 24. Originally scheduled to debut on Oct. 20, 2020, it was pushed to June 25 and then Sept. 17 due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the time of the first delay, producer said they wanted to wait to resume filming until everyone on the crew felt conformable doing so. "We're building a plan that puts as much protection around them as we possibly can." The producer added, "In the plans that we've discussed, they've certainly taken that into account and we'll see when we get there."
With its new release date, Venom: Let There Be Carnage will now open three weeks after Disney and Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Sept. 3) and one week before Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' Dune (Oct. 1).
Plot details regarding the film are scarce, but the movie will see Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams reprise their roles as the antihero Eddie Brock / Venom and Anne Weying, respectively. Woody Harrelson, who appeared in Venom's mid-credits scene, will make his proper debut as the villainous Cletus Kasady / Carnage. This will be the first time Carnage appears in live-action.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage will be the second film in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC). Other films in the shared universe include Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter and an untitled film directed by Olivia Wilde, which is rumored to be a Spider-Woman project. On the TV side, the studio is working on a TV series centered on Silk.
The current status between the SPUMC and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) remains murky. There have been no crossovers between the two universes, and no official announcements have come from Marvel or Sony. However, the Morbius trailer featured a surprise appearance by Michael Keaton. While nothing has been confirmed, many are speculating that he will reprise his role as Adrian Toomes / Vulture from the MCU's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Directed by Andy Serkis, Venom: Let There Be Carnage stars Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott and Stephen Graham. The film arrives in theaters Sept. 24.
