Supergirl Premiere Sends Major Hero to the Phantom Zone | CBR

kWARNING: The following contains major spoilers for "Rebirth," the Season 6 premiere of Supergirl.

In the debut episode of her final season, Supergirl herself got sent to the Phantom Zone. During a standoff with Lex Luthor, Kara sacrificed herself to stop him and save the world from his deadly machinations. Her play worked, allowing the rest of the team to capture Lex, but left them scrambling for a way to save her in the episodes ahead.

During Supergirl's opening scenes, Lex got exactly what he wanted: the power of the gods. He managed to harness Leviathan's power and imbue his body with their immortality and strength. With his newfound abilities, he set out to accomplish his plan once and for all. He would make the people love him, whether they wanted to or not.

"Leviathan is gone," he announced to his mother Lillian. "Next, I'll get rid of the Kryptonian and all her friends. And then, the non-believers. Once I fix this planet, I'll do what the Anti-Monitor failed to do: fix every other planet in the universe."

Lillian was startled by the "non-believer" item on his agenda. When she prompted him to explain, he revealed how he tweaked Obsidian North's VR program to "upgrade people's brains in perpetuity, a little thing I like to call 'I Love Lexie'... I knew that fixing this planet would require big moves that not everyone would appreciate, so I took advantage of Lena's delivery system to make sure that everyone in VR would always appreciate me no matter what I do."

And as for the non-believers? "The satellites I launched during the Obsidian world tour are armed with sonic weapons poised to obliterate the minds of anyone who didn't get the 'I Love Lexie' upgrade," he added gleefully. At Lillian's request, he begrudgingly added an exception for her and his sister Lena, and was busy lining up said satellites when Supergirl contacted him.

With a truth seeker attached to her arm, Kara promised to hand herself over to Lex on the condition that he stop the satellites. He accused her of trying to lure him into a trap; in response, she showed him the truth seeker -- an alien that prevents one from lying -- and reasserted that she had nothing up her sleeve. As such, he agreed to meet her at the Fortress of Solitude and hand over the satellite codes.

Before he left, Lillian attempted to talk him out of it, but his desire to kill the Kryptonians outweighed his commitment to his plan. Meanwhile, Supergirl offered her team some instructions so they could put together a concoction that would strip Lex's powers away. Then, once that plan was underway and she was alone, she began to record her experiences and knowledge on a crystal, indicating she was ready and willing to die for the cause.

Just as Supergirl began to record the second volume, Lex turned up at the Fortress. Almost immediately, he hit her with a ray of Kryptonite, blasting her back into the wall. He continued to torture her this way, while -- unbeknownst to him -- J'onn J'onzz and M'gann destroyed his satellites and Alex and Dreamer retrieved the antidote to his powers. Finally, her body could take no more, and she died under his Kryptonite ray.

Fortunately, Team Supergirl had a plan for that. When Lex danced away, a robot emerged from the depths of the Fortress and imbued her with the light of a yellow sun, healing her. She rebounded just in time for the rest of the team to show up, leading to a massive brawl with Lex. He easily overcame them with his Leviathan powers and spent a little time relishing his victory when he spied a Phantom Zone projector nearby.

With a manic grin, Lex seized the Phantom Zone projector and aimed it at Kara. Nearby, Alex frantically loaded the antidote into her weapon, intending to hit Lex with it before he could do anymore damage. Unfortunately, he was just seconds faster than her. He successfully beamed Kara to the Phantom Zone just before the blast struck him, neutralizing his powers and reducing him to a regular human once more. Thanks to that, Team Supergirl was able to bring him into custody, even as they struggled to accept that Kara is gone -- at least for the time being.

This won't be the last we see of Kara. After all, the episode's stinger showed her unconscious, but alive in the Phantom Zone. However, she looks as though she has landed in a world of trouble, as several ghastly creatures drifted towards her. Since she doesn't have her powers, she will have to rely on her wits to survive the Phantom Zone, at least until her friends figure out a way to bring her back.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Nicole Maines as Dreamer and Jesse Rath as Brainiac-5. New episodes air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
