Outriders is finally gearing up to make its long-awaited debut on both next-gen and last-gen consoles. The extensive demo gave gamers an inside look at what to expect from the highly anticipated sci-fi action RPG. Despite some framerate issues and a few technical problems, Outriders looks to be shaping up quite nicely. It even has an unconventional tone that mirrors some of the over-the-top action films of the 1980s and early 90s. While some people might find Outriders' style a bit cheesy, B-rated movie fans will fall in love with its exaggerated flavor.
B-rated action movies have a distinct appeal that other films don't have. They break up the fast-paced gunfights and martial arts scenes with exaggerated dialogue and acting that is often as cheesy as it is entertaining. Outriders has a similar tone that often resembles a classic Schwarzenegger movie more than a AAA title.
While cheesy dialog exchanges and excessive action sequences can be off-putting for some, many gamers enjoy the over-the-top nature of these cult-like titles. They have a much less serious tone and focus more on entertaining their audience than making a profound statement. Although Outriders has some somber moments, it also makes room for a few goofy one-liners and ridiculous cut-scenes.
One of the best examples of Outriders' B-rated goodness is the scene where a metal pole impales the player's Outrider. The Outrider lets out a bloodcurdling roar as they pull the gigantic pole out of their chest. The hero follows it up with awesomely bad one-liners like, "Well, that just happened." The sheer absurdity of the scene is downright hilarious and would fit in with several low-budget action movies many gamers adore. The demo's filled with other zany moments that will keep players enthused for hours on end.
The main character also resembles a 1980s action hero. They have all the traits of an action hero needs while also demonstrating a witty sense of humor. Most of the iconic B-rated action heroes carried themselves in a similar fashion. They know when to get serious and when to lighten the mood with cheesy catchphrases and light-hearted humor. The main character's demeanor helps push Outriders' story forward in a way that keeps things fresh and enthralling. Players never know what to expect from their Outrider, keeping them engaged in both the story and the character themselves.
If the Outriders demo is an accurate depiction of the finished product, gamers have a lot to look forward to when it launches on April 1st. It has remnants of a 1980s action movie and is a breath of fresh air from the exceedingly serious AAA titles gamers have grown accustomed to over the last few years. Its main goal is to entertain its audience, and it does so phenomenally. Hopefully, the complete game will fix the technical issues and keep its B-rated movie flavor alive throughout the entire game.
