The Promised Neverland: 5 Ways Norman Is A Hero (& 5 He's A Villain)

In The Promised Neverland manga, Norman was always the kind of person who put the safety of his family above all else, thanks to the influence of Emma. Although he was tempted to prioritize his life from time to time, Emma's optimism and loyalty to her family rubbed off on him.

After being transferred to the Lambda facility, Norman changed. He becomes less idealistic and more willing to help the cattle children find happiness even if it was at the expense of demons. He went from being Emma's biggest supporter to an excellent foil character, contrasting with Emma's belief that humans and demons were capable of living in one world peacefully.

10 Hero: He Didn't Run Away By Himself

Despite Emma's and Ray's pleas for him to run away and hide before he was shipped out, Norman refused to do so. He knew that acting selfishly and escaping would only make it harder for the rest of the children to escape.

He brushed off Emma's last-ditch attempt to save him in which she disabled his tracker, and left to face his death. This noble sacrifice was the reason why so many children were able to escape from the farm soon after.

9 Villain: He Experimented On Demons

After leaving Grace Field House, Norman was able to truly understand how little he knew about demons and the world they lived in. He captured dozens of demons and experimented on these prisoners in order to learn more about their biology, discovering that they lose their human characteristics if they do not eat humans for a long time.

He justified these actions as being the best way to protect humans from demons, and because he spent so much time in an experimental facility himself.

8 Hero: He Destroyed The Lambda Facility & Rescued The Children In It

After leaving Grace Field House, Norman was moved from one prison to another. He was subjected to various experiments at Peter Ratri's facility. Being in an enclosed space without Emma or Ray, Norman was forced to find new allies who were hardened from their own experiences.

He eventually destroyed the Lambda facility and escaped with the other experimented children. These actions earned him their loyalty, and they eventually settled down at the Paradise Hideout.

7 Villain: His Goal Was To Annihilate All Demons

After his time at the Lambda facility changed him, Norman finally concluded that the only way for humans to finally live in peace was to eliminate every demon in the world.

Although Emma and Ray made an attempt to talk him out of it, they couldn't get through to him at all. In his eyes, his point of view was realistic. He carried out his plan without hesitation, ending in the death of the world's demon leaders.

6 Hero: He Tried To Help Others At His Own Expense

Norman didn't want to kill demons solely out of hatred. His main goal was to save as many children as possible. This was a characteristic he obtained from Emma when he was younger, and even though he knew that it was unrealistic back then, he still went along with that plan.

In the Lambda facility, he was forced to grow up, constantly telling himself that he needed to be strong. Even when putting his plan to kill the demons together, he often worked through the nights without sleeping.

5 Villain: He Raided Ayshe's Home & Killed Her Adoptive Father

Ayshe was a girl born in a farm, who was supposed to be disposed of. However, one of the demons working there saw himself in her after noticing the large birthmark on the side of her face and took her home.

Although he initially considered eating her, he quickly got attached and chose to raise her as his own child instead. They lived in a secluded area and were both happy. However, Norman and his group assumed she was in danger, so they killed her father and took her with them.

4 Hero: He Used William Minerva's Name To Gather Kids In The Paradise Hideout

William Minerva was a man who inspired hope in children who were able to read his hidden messages in the books that he wrote. He provided them with safe-havens and attempted to create ways for the cattle children to escape to the human world. He died after being betrayed by his brother, and Norman decided that it was better to take on Minerva's name.

Under Minerva's name, he bargained with demons, attacked facilities that held children and spent months working on his plan to save all of the children. With his name, he presented himself as a reliable leader.

3 Villain: He Used Lord Geelan With The Intention Of Stabbing Him In The Back

Under William Minerva's name, Norman met with Lord Geelan and offered him the heads of the demons his group killed not long before. He promised to take down all of the demons currently in power so that Geelan could seize control, in exchange for freeing every cattle child.

He promised that if he didn't uphold his end of the bargain, Geelan could eat him and all of the freed cattle children. However, Norman had every intention of making Geelan do all the work, and planned to betray him afterward.

2 Hero: He Searched For & Found Emma In The Human World

After Emma forges a new Promise, she gives up her memories in exchange for the safe passage of all cattle children to the human world. Despite this, the children of Grace Field House look everywhere for her until they finally encounter her.

Norman expresses his relief and gratitude upon seeing that she's alright. They had no idea how she was or where she was, but they had spent a long time looking for her regardless.

1 Villain: He Tried To Kill Mujika & Sonju

Despite learning from Emma and Ray that demons who didn't eat humans existed, Norman was so convinced that all demons needed to die that he thought that they would be a threat to humans too.

He was stuck in an "us vs them" mentality that despite Emma's protests, he tried to kill the supposedly evil-blooded demons behind her back. He didn't succeed, but the demon world would have been in shambles if he did.
