Vince McMahon Reportedly Congratulated Paul Wight on AEW Deal

Paul Wight's former WWE boss Vince McMahon reportedly offered congratulations after news broke that the wrestler inked a new deal with AEW.

"Paul Wight tells me that Vince McMahon called him and congratulated him and wished him luck when the signing with AEW was announced," tweeted Sean Ross Sapp, of WrestleMyBritishGranny.com. "They agreed this was the best move for him."

Sapp added, "There's no heat or dirt between them. There was a mutual dissolution of the WWE deal at the end of the tenure, and Wight told me that he had no idea if he'd be able to come to AEW and was just hopeful there would be. He had no talks with AEW prior."

Wight appeared to double down on these comments while talking to reporters following AEW Revolution. "Here's the thing, Vince actually called me the day it was announced that I had signed with AEW,” Wight said, as reported by Wrestling Inc. "He wished me a lot of luck. He agreed that I am going to be a fantastic asset to AEW, thanked me for all the years I had worked in WWE."

Wight, known in the WWE ring as Big Show said "there's no animosity" between him and McMahon. He stated, "There's no anger, there's no dirt so to speak. This just came down to, you know, contract negotiations and opportunities."

The wrestler also revealed that he ultimately decided to move over to AEW because he "needed a fresh start." He continued, "I think Vince understands that and understands me as a talent, and this was that opportunity for me to do that."

Wight confirmed in February he signed a long-term deal with AEW and appeared at both AEW Dynamite and AEW Revolution. As part of the deal, Wight will both compete in the ring under the name of Paul Wight and serve as a commentator for AEW Dark: Elevation. Former WWE Icon Sting also signed with AEW in December 2020.

"It's been amazing to watch what AEW has built in just a couple of years," Wight stated. "AEW Dark is an incredible platform to hone the skills of up-and-coming wrestlers, but I also love that established AEW talent can build out their personalities and showcase themselves in new ways on Dark. It's no exaggeration when they say that AEW is boundless."
