While Robert Downey Jr.'s role as Tony Stark in 2008 Iron Man is often credited as the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it can be easy to forget that Paul Bettany also made his debut as Stark's artificial intelligence known as J.A.R.V.I.S., which hilariously stood for "Just A Rather Very Intelligent System."
Of course, J.A.R.V.IS. grew and evolved over the course of the MCU's "Infinity Saga" to become the Avenger known as the Vision, whose story was recently continued in the hit Disney+ series WandaVision. From the time J.A.R.V.I.S. first appeared in the MCU to Vision's most recent appearance in WandaVision, a lot has changed for the character.
10 He Gained A Powerful New Body
Without a doubt, the biggest change J.A.R.V.IS. experienced in the MCU occurred in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron following the creation of the Ultron A.I., who seemingly destroyed J.A.R.V.IS. during his sentient awakening. However, J.A.R.V.IS. was recovered by Tony Stark who discovered the A.I. was still actively fighting against Ultron's programming online.
Ultron kidnapped Dr. Helen Cho in order to use her advanced process to create a new synthezoid body powered by the Mind Stone. The Avengers were able to steal this body and uploaded J.A.R.V.IS.' A.I. instead of Ultron, creating a brand new being who took the name of Vision.
9 Met & Defeated One Of His Creators
As the Vision, J.A.R.V.IS. evolved past his original designation as he was now the sum of a number of different parts, as characters like Ultron, Helen Cho, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and even Thor all played a part in his ultimate creation.
One of his first missions alongside the Avengers was to finish the battle he started with Ultron as "father" met "son" or the created met his creator. While this might be a shocking experience for most humanity, Vision was able to not only defeat his creator but also learn from Ultron's mistakes so that he wouldn't repeat them.
8 Proved Himself Worthy By Wielding Mjolnir
Avengers: Age of Ultron featured the fan-favorite moment that saw the Avengers casually attempting to lift Thor's hammer Mjolnir to determine whether or not they are worthy enough to wield it, as per Odin's enchantment. While no one was able to even budge it (save for Steve Rogers briefly), Vision was able to prove himself worthy during a crucial discussion about his motivations.
Vision handed the hammer to Thor in order to prove he was not only worthy of their trust but also on their side against Ultron. Of course, Iron Man and Captain America continued to comedically debate his worthiness after the battle.
7 Joined The New Avengers Before They Were Divided By Civil War
While the Vision worked alongside the team following his creation in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he officially joined Captain America and Black Widow's roster of New Avengers in the finale of the film that included other new heroes like Falcon, War Machine, and Wanda.
It was this team of Avengers that were responsible for the Lagos disaster in Captain America: Civil War that led to the Sokovia Accords, though Vision wasn't with the team for that mission. This was the last official team of Avengers before they were split by the events of 2016's Civil War.
6 He Fell In Love With His Teammate Wanda Maximoff
The connection between Wanda Maximoff and Vision began during their first encounters in Avengers: Age of Ultron that saw Vision save Wanda from certain death in Sokovia after she destroyed Ultron's main body. They grew closer together as members of the New Avengers who were both alone, as Wanda lost her brother Pietro in Age of Ultron and Vision was a newly created being.
While they were on opposing sides during Civil War, it only helped them see their feelings for each other. 2018's Avengers: Infinity War then revealed that they had fallen in love with each other and were willing to give up their costumed lives to stay with each other before the threat of Thanos arrived.
5 Created His Human Masquerade Of Victor Shade
Avengers: Infinity War also revealed a new facet of Vision's powers as he first appeared in human form while on a romantic getaway with Wanda away from their respective teams of Avengers. His human form was little more than holographic hard-light tricks, though Vision's use of his human disguise references his comic storyline as well.
In the comics, Vision uses a holographic projector to assume an entirely new human identity known as Victor Shade. While Vision never used the name Victor Shade in the movies, it was a nice touch that highlighted the character's evolution and desire to become more human.
4 Destroyed By Thanos During Infinity War
The Avengers reformed in Avengers: Infinity War once they were alerted to the looming threat of Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones, which would bring them directly to Vision and his powerful Mind Stone that aided in his creation.
While the team put up a valiant effort and Shuri was almost able to remove the Mind Stone from Vision, Wanda was ultimately forced to use her own Mind Stone-derived abilities to destroy the Infinity Stone along with Vision. Unfortunately, Thanos was able to rewind time and viciously ripped the Mind Stone from Vision's forehead, killing him all over again.
3 Got Married To Wanda During WandaVision
However, following the Avengers' climactic takedown of Thanos five years later during Avengers: Endgame, Wanda was able to bring Vision back to life when she took over the town of Westview and rewrote reality using her mysterious and powerful magical abilities.
While Wanda and Vision lived like a typical suburban married couple in a sitcom, it wasn't until Vision suggested that Wanda create some wedding rings for them that they somewhat officially tied the knot in just the first stage of their new family's development on WandaVision.
2 Became A Father & Had Twin Boys With Wanda
WandaVision greatly decreased the usual time it takes to start a family thanks to Wanda's reality-altering abilities, as she moved from conception to pregnancy to birth in the span of (mostly) one episode.
Vision became the father to twin human boys, who they named Thomas and William, whose own development was also greatly rushed as they moved from infancy to pre-teen very quickly. While the ultimate fate of Tommy and Billy is left unknown following the finale of WandaVision, the twins had a bright future as members of the Young Avengers in the comics.
1 Rebuilt As A New Vision By Project Cataract
A new organization called S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division) debuted in WandaVision as they begin to investigate the mysteries surrounding the sealed-off town of Westview. However, it was soon revealed that S.W.O.R.D. director Hayward was also in charge of the covert Project Cataract, which was tasked with creating a new Vision.
This new Vision/Cataract was completely white, lacking all memories and emotions, and tasked with eliminating the original Vision that lived within WandaVision. However, the original Vision was able to unlock some of the memories and emotions stored within Cataract's body, resulting in a completely new character that survived WandaVision while the original Vision did not.
