Elizabeth Olsen had a lot of say when it came to the construction of her final Scarlet Witch costume in WandaVision.
The show's director and executive producer, Matt Shakman, spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the making of the costume and how Olsen's feedback led to its final design. According to Shakman, Olsen was very honest about what it felt like to finally be wearing the outfit that would officially introduce the Scarlet Witch to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Olsen's comments, which Shakman described as "practical," defined the moves she could and could not do, which led to some re-engineering so that she would have the mobility she needed for the part. "It's one thing to look amazing," he said. "It's another thing to actually function." Having played Wanda for years, Olsen was quick to pick apart the costume and figure out what would work for her and her character.
Shakman also revealed that the team consulted with Olsen throughout the designing process, first by showing her the initial art, which she loved and was very excited about. Though she also loved wearing the reproduction of the classic comics' Scarlet Witch outfit, it would go no further than the Halloween episode, which allowed the designers the opportunity to apply their own twists to the iconic character's look.
Many versions were presented before the one featured in "The Finale" became the ultimate choice. The part of the costume that inspired the most discussion was the crown. "We started with a much smaller one, because your initial instinct is, how big can you really go?," Shakman said. "Because it's so big in the comics. And then we quickly realized, go big or go home! So, we got bigger."
Olsen had to be cloaked and hidden from potential paparazzi, but when she got to emerge as the Scarlet Witch, it was a huge -- and "awesome" -- payoff for the team who had created her iconic look.
Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. The series is available to stream on Disney+.
