WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 9, "The Series Finale," streaming now on Disney+.
For nearly seven full episodes, WandaVision kept fans guessing as to who the series' big villain was. It was only when "Breaking the Fourth Wall" came to a close that the nosy neighbor known as Agnes revealed herself to be the villainous witch, Agatha Harkness. Agatha then took Wanda on a tour of the past moments that defined her, all in the hopes of learning how she was able to use her magic to create the Hex that transformed Westview into a sitcom-inspired reality.
Now, in the season finale, Agatha and Wanda face off in an epic magic duel. But even though the villain ends up defeated, the series opens the door for her return as a potential hero.
In "The Series Finale," Agatha and Wanda unleash their magical powers on one another. Ultimately, thanks to a valuable lesson from Agatha herself, Wanda defeats her opponent, reclaims all of her powers and discovers her full potential as the Scarlet Witch. In most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's movies, the studio has been rightfully criticized for killing its main villains too often. Thankfully, that isn't the case in WandaVision. As the season comes to a close, Agatha is still alive, but she is left imprisoned.
Indeed, while Wanda drops the Hex that transformed Westview into a sitcom reality completely, she performs a spell on Agatha that traps her in the persona she initially had: the Nosy Neighbor. But before Agatha is transformed back into her televised role, she warns Wanda of the dangers she's just unleashed now that she has become the Scarlet Witch. In fact, she says Wanda is going to need her help and the Avenger replies that if she does, she knows exactly where to find her.
This exchange between Wanda and Agatha seemingly teases the villain's return. The character may be trapped in another persona, but she is alive, and she can be awakened at any time. If Wanda ever finds herself in need of Agatha's help, it means that the two of them could then be on the same side. This in turn could lead Agatha to become more of a hero, a role she currently embodies in the comics.
Indeed, in the Marvel comics, Agatha started in a position similar to WandaVision. She was an evil witch and rival to Wanda Maximoff, but she eventually became a sort of a frenemy. Agatha would use her ancient knowledge of magic to become Wanda's mentor, and she would also assist other magical users in the Marvel Universe.
Most recently, in the pages of the latest Captain America series written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu, Adam Kubert and other artists, Agatha Harkness was revealed to be a member of the Daughters of Liberty. The Daughters of Liberty are a group of female superheroes whose origin dates back to colonial times. Currently, the team includes Peggy Carter, Black Widow, Misty Knight, Susan Storm, Spider-Woman and others. In the series, the Daughters have assisted Steve Rogers in clearing his name and fighting a coalition of enemies known as the Power Elite. And thanks to her magical abilities, Agatha Harkness has proven to be a crucial addition to the team.
The door is clearly open for Agatha's return in the MCU, and her path to heroism could be very similar to the comics. She could start by mentoring Wanda Maximoff, only to become another important magic user to join the side of good. This isn't to say that the MCU will introduce the Daughters of Liberty anytime soon, but it sure looks like the stage is set for Agatha to join the likes of Loki and the Winter Soldier as villains-turned-heroes.
Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes.
