WandaVision director Matt Shakman discussed helming the entire series by himself and why he'd be hesitant to do it again in the future.
Shakman appeared on Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin's Fatman Beyond podcast to dive into the season -- and likely series -- finale of Marvel's first show for Disney+. Smith pointed out how unusual it was for Shakman to direct all nine episodes rather than tackle two or three before another director took the reigns, as is typical for a TV show. But Shakman confirmed that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had a very good reason for the ambitious task: to make the show more like a big movie.
"That was exactly the plan, yeah," Shakman said. "That was what Kevin asked in my final meeting. He said, 'Can you do all of this?' And I've done whole seasons on It's Always Sunny. So I said, 'Yeah, sure. Yeah. One director can do this.' It's a big job, and I would probably be not as quick to say yes if that question were asked me again. But that was what he wanted to do. And what they at Marvel wanted to do is that they had made a lot of movies, they knew how to make movies; this was their first television show and they wanted to make it like a movie. So they wanted to have one director, and that's what they did for Loki and for Falcon and Winter Soldier and for us. I think some of those shows after that they've gone to maybe two directors splitting it up, three directors splitting it up."
To keep the tone consistent and more like the experience of a film, Shakman handled the entire season, which all reports indicate will be a standalone show. Similarly, it's rumored that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, directed by Kari Skogland, and Loki, directed by Kate Herron, will also be self-contained stories. After that, shows like Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye and She-Hulk may be set up for multiple seasons, explaining why Marvel would want more than one director involved. Then again, it could just be that they learned their lesson when it came to having a single person undertake such a gargantuan task.
Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. The series is available to stream on Disney+.
