10 Cursed Anime Techniques With The Biggest Drawbacks | CBR

When anyone jumps into a new action anime with a new kind of power scaling ability, they're expecting to see something unique and cool. Many anime do this to great effect in different ways, whether it's One Piece with its Devil Fruit or Dragon Ball with its endless transformations.

Of course, in many of these series, these techniques come with a drawback, some more than others. Techniques such as these are classified as "cursed techniques." The drawbacks vary depending on the technique and at times it may seem the cons outweigh the pros, making the gained ability not even worth it.

10 The Bakugan Series Features A Power-Up That Isn't Worth It

In the Yu-Gi-Oh!-like series, Bakugan: Battle Brawlers, there is a card power-up that is able to give the monster it's used on a super-powered evolution.

This card is called an Ability-X Card, and the evolution caused by it may grant power but is vastly unstable. There isn't just a chance of the Bakugan it's used on going insane but it could literally explode as well.

9 Hiei Of Yu Yu Hakusho Has A Killer Cursed Power

Hiei, Yusuke Urameshi's enemy-turned-ally, has a classic example of a cursed technique called Dragon of Darkness Flame. The ability is very powerful and can basically one-shot any enemy it's aimed at. Of course, it isn't that simple.

However, if the user isn't powerful enough but still uses it, the dragon will turn and attack them instead. Hiei almost befell this outcome until he increased in power as soon as the dragon turned on him, absorbing it and becoming more powerful in the end.

8 Jin's Ability Is Basically Fatal If It Doesn't Succeed

In Samurai Champloo viewers find that one of the members of the main trio, Jin, has a technique called the Dangerous Forbidden Technique that he learns and doesn't unleash until his final episode.

When he finally uses this technique in battle, viewers find that it entails allowing himself to be stabbed and killing his foe as their sword is stuck in them and they are defenseless. The drawback of this technique isn't even necessary to explain.

7 Ruroni Kenshin Has An Ability That Ends The User

In Ruroni Kenshin it's said that the main character, Kenshin, has an ultimate technique that can result in death or the loss of a leg whether one hesitates or not.

When Kenshin finally uses this technique, it's not sure whether he hesitates or not, but no matter what it draws back on him hard, resulting in his retirement from swordsmanship.

6 Evangelion Introduces A Fearful Technique

Neon Genesis Evangelion's feature of piloting the Evangelions may as well be a cursed technique in itself but the film Rebuild of Evangelion introduces a traditional one.

This technique is called "Beast Mode" and it gives the Evangelion a power boost, but can destroy the pilot's mind. Not only is it painful but it can basically turn the pilot into an animal.

5 Many One Piece Characters Are Hit By A Dangerous Drawback

In order to gain access to some of the most spectacular abilities in One Piece, one has to eat the mysterious Devil Fruit. In eating this, one can get powers such as Luffy's rubber ability or Smoker's smoke control.

However, for a series that takes place so much on the sea, the drawback is pretty scary. Once one eats a Devil Fruit the sea curses them and as soon as they touch the ocean, they lose all movement and are susceptible to drowning.

4 Naruto's Signature Technique Can Be Fatal

Every Naruto fan knows about the Kinjustu. This term is literally translated to "forbidden technique" and Naruto uses one as his signature move throughout the series.

This technique is the Shadow Clone Jutsu which creates clones that basically take life force from the user. If too many clones are created or too many die, the user will die. Thankfully, Naruto's superhuman Nine-Tails chakra helps him survive.

3 Rising Shield Hero Has Multiple Drawbacks

In the new anime series The Rising Shield Hero, there is a group of techniques called The Cursed Series that all require sacrifice in order to be used.

One attack from this Cursed Series is called the Blood Sacrifice which is used by Naofumi. This ability can nearly kill, if not fully kill, any opponent. However, the same happens to the user as it takes blood from their body as payment.

2 Tekkaman Blade, In General, Is Cursed

Tekkaman Blade has one of the most iconic transformations in all of anime, but it is sadly one of the most cursed and can be seen as a cursed technique itself.

In the series, D-Boy finds out that the Tekkaman transformation slowly destroys his body and thinks his evolution of it will stop this drawback. However, it ends up with another effect of wiping out his memories.

1 Vegeta Has Kept Trying To Use One To No Effect

In Dragon Ball, Vegeta has a cursed technique that he first debuted against Majin Buu during his Majin Vegeta episode. This attack called "Final Explosion" is powerful but kills the user after one use as well.

He's mastered this ability since its use on Buu (which was for nothing since Buu survived) and used it on Jiren. Of course, it didn't work here either and left him a sitting duck for Universe 11's hero.
