The Hunter X Hunter universe has introduced many unique characters, abilities, and situations that render it one of the best series in anime history. From roaming bands of murderers to hives of hybrid beasts, Gon and Killua face no shortage of threats.
Unfortunately, there are a number of inconsistencies that the anime has ignored - whether deliberate or otherwise - in order for it to be an enjoyable narrative experience. Through analyzing its plot holes, a better understanding can be gained of how the story did not make sense and the varying degrees of narrative flaws debilitating it.
10 No One Recognizes The Phantom Troupe In Public
The Phantom Troupe was an organization of international fugitives led by Chrollo Lucilfer. Following his whims, they committed a heinous list of atrocities, including genocide against Kurapika's people and the destruction they visited on Yorknew.
In spite of the impressive bounty on their heads, they make no sincere efforts to disguise themselves in public - and interestingly enough, they were not identified by any bystanders. Even the terrible disguise that Chrollo concocted in order to get close to Neon Nostrade somehow did not arouse her suspicion.
9 Gon Broke His Own Nen Condition By Surviving
When Gon lost control and unleashed his full wrath against Neferpitou, it was under the condition that he harnessed all of the strength he would ever have. Somehow, he managed to survive anyway, even in an emaciated state.
This defies everything previously established about Nen conditions, especially since Alluka would later return him to perfect health. Considering that he ultimately evaded repercussions for his aggression, it made what should have been a memorable final act of vengeance generic and incongruent to what has already been established in the universe's lore.
8 No One Else Used The Poor Man's Rose
The poor man's rose was a relatively cheap and accessible explosive that was only compatible with the body of a human host. When introduced, the series mentioned that it was frequently employed by dictators against their adversaries.
However, the converse should have been true since rebels are more inclined to give their lives (and because of the devastation even a single usage of the rose could unleash). Considering its staggering power, it's inexplicable how the bomb was not employed earlier - or even vaguely mentioned before Netero's climactic duel against Meruem at the end of the arc.
7 There Were Hundreds Of Exam Participants Despite It Being Difficult To Find
The Hunter Exam was supposed to be incredibly difficult to find, with its contestants being tested in a number of ways before their first official challenge. In spite of this, there were hundreds of participants ready to prove their worth, with less capable characters like Tonpa surviving its preliminary rigors.
Realistically, there should have been a much more moderate number of hunters at the beginning of the test. This is especially true given the low competence that many of its contenders displayed, with dozens of applicants failing even the most rudimentary challenges (such as the jog in the beginning).
6 The Hunter Association Enabled Evil People To Commit Atrocities
There are a number of inconsistencies with the Hunter's Association entailing they may not be as heroic as they present themselves. The most immediate is for the number of sinister individuals they allowed to participate in their games, such as Hisoka Morow.
While their activity may not seem particularly detrimental on their own, since they only endanger the other contestants during the exam, receiving a Hunter's License will allow them to get away with murder more expediently. It was never clarified why the Association has such an insidious provision for its members.
5 There Should Still Be Chimera Ants Attacking The Continents
After the death of the Chimera Queen and Meruem's ascension, he dismissed most of his subjects to do as they pleased. Many chose different paths, departing in all directions to find their own fortune (some even deciding upon perilous destinations like Meteor City).
Though the King and his guards may have been defeated, there are still many of his minions that have yet to be accounted for. Perturbingly, the Hunter's Association only addressed the ants remaining in the NGL.
4 Komugi Wasn't Daunted That Meruem Was A Mass Murderer
Komugi was a Gungi master who continued to beat Meruem in their board game matches. Despite the threats he issued toward her and his promise to take her life if she ever failed, she remained undaunted because of the value she placed on her skill.
Though her lack of self-preservation is understandable, it remains inexplicable how she could abide by the mountains of corpses that Meruem made before and after she was invited to his castle. It's inconsistent with her compassionate and demure mannerisms.
3 East Gorteau Was Only Defended By A Single Nen User
East Gorteau became the foundation for Meruem's empire. Its previous leader, Ming Jol-ik, hoarded his state's resources in order to mount the most formidable defense possible against would-be conquerors.
In spite of this, there was only one Nen user defending the palace from invaders. Though an affinity for Nen is rare, it is odd that a despot committed to military dominance would have such a meager private guard. As a consequence of Ming's myopic judgment, the King furthered his own mastery over his power and rapidly became even more unstoppable.
2 The Chimera Ants Were Incredibly Diverse Despite The Reagents Required To Make Them
To create a chimera ant, the Queen must eat two members of any given species. What minions she produces are contingent on her current diet, with her supply usually maintained through her soldiers.
However, the NGL never displayed as much indigenous fauna as the Queen herself would produce. This makes the ants under her command - ones diverse as crocodiles, squid, and even hyenas - inexplicable, since she should not have had the organic materials necessary to create them.
1 Killua Got Away With Several Murders Before He Even Had A License
As previously mentioned, the Hunter's License allowed its user to get away with murder under most circumstances. Despite the foes who Killua slew throughout the exam (including Johness and Bodoro), he was not prosecuted for his actions.
Therefore, not only is the Hunter's Association complicit in their members' kills, but they also overlook fatalities inflicted by (and against) the participants of their own games, even if Killua would be disqualified for his actions. However, his status as a member of the Zoldyck family was likely conducive to evading the law.
