10 Most Broken Power Systems In Shonen Anime, Ranked | CBR

One of the biggest reasons genres like shonen are so popular among anime fans is because of the visually stunning fight sequences they offer fans, especially when it comes to shows like One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia, where heroes are plenty and there is no scarcity of fantastic fights.

While fans always expect the main character to be (or to become) the strongest hero in his world, sometimes, it is the power systems in their universes that appear to be severely broken. While the MC is portrayed as an OP character who cannot be killed, most characters around him, especially the side characters, have powers so useless or illogical in comparison that it makes fan wonder, “Why even bother giving them powers?”

10 As Satan’s Son, Rin Was The Most Powerful Creature In The Anime (Blue Exorcist)

Even though Yukio was his twin, Rin’s satanic powers were completely on another level. In fact, the demon Mephistopheles (who was actively trying to trigger Rin’s powers) was quite impressed with what he saw during the anime’s training arc.

One would think that centuries-old demons like Mephistopheles and Amaimon would easily obliterate Rin, but it appears as if being the MC of the show automatically made Rin the most powerful creature as well.

9 Korosensei Was Basically An Indestructible Octopus-Like Alien Creature (Assassination Classroom)

Korosensei is an excellent example of plot armor, where his entire existence hinges on the fact that, except for maybe 1-2 things, there’s nothing in the world that can destroy him.

The entire anime's plot revolves around his students trying to find innovative ways to destroy him so that they can prevent the earth from blowing up, only to always be outsmarted by his hidden powers and abilities in the very end.

8 Leonardo’s All-Seeing Eyes Of The Gods Puts Him In A League Of His Own (Kekkai Sensen)

Even in Leonardo’s world, nobody comes close to the powers he possesses. His eyes allow him to see details no human can, they can self-heal, and they allow him to see visions through the eyes of other people or force people to hallucinate things he wants them to hallucinate about.

His eyes also allow him to perceive a creature’s aura and use that aura to see illusions of the past that may have altered the present or the future.

7 The Powers Of The Demon & Shinigami Are Never Properly Established (Black Butler)

At the beginning of the anime, the demon butler Sebastian was shown to be the most powerful creature. However, the Book of Atlantic revealed that the Undertaker was, in fact, a lot more powerful than Sebastian.

Yet, the reason behind him being so OP is never explained, especially seeing how the Undertaker is easily able to fend off not only the immensely powerful Sebastian, but two other shinigami (Grell and Ronald) simultaneously.

6 Saiki’s So OP That Most OP Anime Characters Pale In Comparison (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K)

In a world that’s occupied by regular human beings, two normal human beings give birth to the most powerful young boy in their universe –with no explanation given for this phenomenon.

While Saiki’s world does consist of other super-powered individuals, their powers pale so much in comparison to his that they may as well be regular human beings with no powers whatsoever. While the anime is a parody show, it still is considered as one where the power system is entirely broken in favor of Saiki.

5 Saitama Defeated The Universe’s Strongest Creature With Just One Punch (One-Punch Man)

The entire premise of the show is how Saitama can defeat absolutely anybody with one punch, despite him being nothing but a simple human being. He is the strongest creature in the universe, defeating the ultimate boss Boros in a battle that took place over two episodes.

Needless to say, while the other S-Class heroes were strong, absolutely none of them was strong enough to beat Saitama in a one-on-one battle.

4 Nobody Compares To The Inexplicable Powers That Shiro Possesses (Deadman Wonderland)

As the show’s main character, Shiro is expectedly the strongest in the series. However, the issue with this fact is how the other powerful blood users in the series (like Ganta or Minatsuki) do not even come close to the amazing and incomparable powers Shiro possesses.

While the reason behind her powers is hinted at (illegal human experimentation), the anime, without a doubt, possesses a broken power system.

3 The Sharingan Made The Uchiha Clan Members Too OP (Naruto)

When Sharingan was first introduced in Naruto, it was simply a dojutsu that allowed the user to copy their opponent's techniques. However, as the show progressed, this Kekkei Genkai became so overpowered that it could be used to manipulate even time and space. Even though the Uchiha clan was massacred before the show even started, the four Uchiha who were still alive were so powerful that they destroyed the entire world.

Itachi could defeat his enemies using his Genjutsu in a matter of seconds, Obito could manipulate time and space, Madara put the world under Infinite Tsukuyomi, and Sasuke surpassed them all by the end of the show. These characters were so powerful that they could only be killed by other Uchiha or, in the case of Madara, by a God. None of the other shinobi in the series ever killed a Sharingan-wielding Uchiha.

2 Even Among The Death Note Users, Nobody Was A Match For Light’s Brilliance (Death Note)

In the beginning, Light is the show’s most OP character since he’s the only one who possesses a Death Note. However, even after the arrival of other users like Misa, Kiyomi, and Teru, Light remained the most powerful man on earth.

While the Death Note did help him achieve his goals, his frighteningly brilliant mind was his true weapon, thanks to which he was able to defeat his ultimate enemy, L, by having him killed.

1 How Can Just One Quirk Be Declared The Best Or Strongest In The World? (My Hero Academia)

The problem with Quirks in this anime is two-fold. First, the Quirks are completely random, with most of them existing for the sake of adding diversity to the show and serving no practical purpose.

Second, comparing one Quirk to another, and declaring one superior to the other, makes no sense when one pits Quirks like One-For-All against something like Erasure. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and more than their “strength,” it is how they are used that makes them effective (or useless) on the battlefield.
