An X-Men Leader May Have Kicked Off a Mutant-Human War | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Marauders #19 by Gerry Duggan, Stefano Caselli, Edgar Delgado & VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

The X-Men have been doing their best to work with the other governments of the world to formally become a part of the global theatre. This requires a lot of careful diplomatic decisions, especially in light of how the mutants have recently enraged other nations. They may have also utilized some surprisingly dangerous tactics that could potentially cause more chaos.

Bishop's most recent attack on the Homines Verendi may have done some serious damage to the anti-mutant organization and their Reavers, but it could also set up some serious conflict going forward.

The Marauders have become increasingly entangled in the affairs of Madripoor -- especially after encountering Homines Verendi and learning of their intentions to tear apart Madripoor for their own gain. This has resulted in both sides making powerful and unexpected plays. The Hellfire Trading Corporation invested heavily in Lowtown, which the Homines Verendi wanted to tear down to make room for skyscrapers. In response, Homines Verendi member Max Frankenstein was able to create a new form of Reaver and unleash them on the populace, routing out residents while even forcing the Marauders into a diplomatic incident. This led to the Marauders being officially barred from entering Madripoor by the United Nations.

The Marauders are able to find a workaround, however, thanks to the intervention of the Morlocks. As unofficial parts of the mutant community who are not associated with the Quiet Council, the Morlocks are able to sneak into Madripoor and lend their aid to the citizens. But it turns out that one member of the Marauders also made their way onto the island. Sneaking through the city, Bishop was able to enter the Homines Verendi headquarters. He reveals to Frankenstein that he's lined the lab with bombs, which may not stop him permanently but will at least stall the production of more Reavers. Although Frankenstein initially believes he can at least use security camera footage to incriminate the mutants, Bishop was able to disable those first before escaping the exploding lab.

It's a bold move by the mutants, in general, to flaunt public perception and imbed a group of mutants in Lowtown -- who, to their credit, have grown appreciative of their new residents and even redubbed the district Mutietown. But Bishop's move is bordering on being too provocative. While his actions certainly saved lives he still went against specific orders from the global community, and he did so without the consent of the Marauder's leader, Kate Pryde. Making matters even more complicated, Bishop is a War Captain of Krakoa -- essentially meaning he's a prominent member of the mutant military, lending some official Krakoan status to the assault.

While Bishop presumably removed any way of proving his involvement in the attack, there's still the possibility that his presence will be identified in some way. This could make things more complex for Krakoa going forward in the global theatre, especially with the upcoming Hellfire Gala set to see dignitaries from across the world come together. Homines Verendi have also been invited to the event and could use this latest salvo as an excuse to draw unwanted attention on Krakoa and its people. While what Bishop did is certainly understandable, there was still a degree of recklessness to his actions that may lead to serious consequences.
