Andrew Lincoln Reveals Tentative Start Window for Walking Dead Movie

According to The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln, the upcoming solo film starring his character, Rick Grimes, could enter production as soon as this spring, lockdown permitting.

"I'm not filming at the moment," Lincoln stated in a recent interview with SFX Magazine. "I'm still very much in lockdown. We're very excited about how, at the first available opportunity, we're going to go into production – there's talk of it being spring. I can't wait to get those cowboy boots." In other words, if all goes to plan, The Walking Dead Universe's first feature film could start filming very, very soon.

Lincoln starred as lead character Rick Grimes throughout the first nine seasons of AMC's The Walking Dead. The upcoming Walking Dead film -- which currently lacks an official title -- will follow Rick's continued adventures following Lincoln's departure from the television show at the end of Season 9. Pollyanna McIntosh is also expected to reprise her role as Jadis from The Walking Dead Seasons 7-9.

The Walking Dead movie was originally announced in late 2018 as the first in a trilogy of AMC Original Films. In 2019, AMC announced that the films would be released theatrically, with Universal Pictures distributing. However, with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic greatly affecting the shooting and release schedules of countless productions throughout 2020 -- including The Walking Dead and its spinoffs -- there has been very little in the way of updates regarding the upcoming film.

That being said, the film's director, Rosemary Rodriguez, recently implied that she expects the return of Rick Grimes to hit the big screen sometime this year. Meanwhile, the original Walking Dead TV show is currently gearing up for its 11th and final season, which is slated to premiere on AMC this August.

The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton and Cooper Andrews. Season 11 premieres Aug. 22 on AMC.
