Big Bang Theory Writers Didn't Know if Amy Would Marry Sheldon When He Proposed

The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik revealed neither she nor the show's writers knew if Amy would accept Sheldon's marriage proposal when they wrote the Season 10 finale cliffhanger.

"No, no, no. I really did not know the answer," Bialik told Insider. The actor added that, because the proposal took place at the end of the season "our writers got to sort of talk it out."

"They didn't even necessarily have a unanimous agreement on what should happen," Bialik continued. "It's something that they had to decide as a show, 'What are we going to do?'"

Bialik portrayed Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler, the love interest of Jim Parsons' Sheldon Cooper, for Seasons 3 through Season 12. After a brief breakup following Penny and Leonard's wedding in Season 10, Sheldon ultimately realized Amy was the woman for him.

The Season 10 finale, "The Long Distance Dissonance," ended on a cliffhanger with Sheldon flying to New Jersey to propose to Amy. While Amy ultimately accepted Sheldon's proposal in the Season 11 premiere, the pair didn't actually exchange vows until the Season 11 finale episode, "The Bow Tie Asymmetry." When Amy and Sheldon's wedding takes place at the end of Season 11, it's officiated by Star Wars' Mark Hamill, who portrays himself in the episode.

Also, Bialik shared that she thinks it's still too soon for a Big Bang Theory reunion. "Look, I think it's still very soon, you know?" Bialik added, "I haven't heard anything about it and I just feel really lucky that I get to continue working with Jim Parsons in a producer capacity." Parsons currently serves as a producer on Bialik's new Fox show, Call Me Kat.

In addition to Call Me Kat, Bialik has also been working with Blossom creator Don Reo to develop a reboot of the hit '90s sitcom. "At a certain point, I may just start a grassroots fan campaign to see if we can do it because we absolutely would love people to see where these characters are," she stated, noting that NBC has been resistant to a reboot.

The Big Bang Theory aired on CBS from 2007-2019 and starred Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nuyyar, Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik. All twelve seasons of the show are currently streaming on HBO Max.
