BioShock Job Listing Hints at Next Game's Open-World Concept

BioShock 4 dropped some clues to the design of its upcoming video game -- hinting that the fourth video game is returning to a fan-favorite aspect from the original game.

Cloud Chamber, the studio designing the latest game in the BioShock series, posted new job listings that revealed the game's "open-world" concept, as seen on its website.

Among many open positions was a call for a Senior Writer "who can weave impactful, character-driven stories in an open world setting." Whoever has the role in the future will be responsible for developing the game's core story -- including dialogue and overall narrative -- as well as "brainstorming primary and secondary mission content with the design." Fans speculated that the latter section of the job description supports the idea that the next BioShock will be a vast world with many side-quests in store.

Cloud Chamber also has a call for a Senior World Designer that lends credence to the open-world theory. The role is described as fitting for "someone who enjoys creating the little moments in a World that delight the player, enhance the Narrative of the world, and make the game world feel alive encouraging players to stay and explore."

While plot details have no been revealed, some gaming aspects were hinted at further -- namely that it'll still be a first-person shooter, contain AI and crowded urban areas. Another position listed role for an AI programming position to craft an "urban crowd system" and "the systemic tribal ecology of a sometimes hostile AI."

Lastly, while the Senior Game Designer position didn't reveal much, it did require whoever holds that title to work on "first-person camera design."

Unlike the original BioShock game, which contained open-ended levels and explorable areas, 2010's BioShock 2 and 2013's BioShock: Infinite opted to create more linear experiences. Both BioShock 2 and Infinite featured areas that couldn't be revisited once completed.

In 2019, BioShock 4 was announced by video game publisher 2K. At the time of the game's announcement, 2K President David Ismailer stated, "We can’t wait to see where its powerful narrative and iconic, first-person shooter gameplay head in the future with our new studio team at Cloud Chamber leading the charge."

BioShock 4 is still in active development. There's no release date set at this time.
