Black Widow: Trailer Views Surpasses WandaVision & Black Panther

Black Widow's third trailer received over 13 million more views than its previous trailer, breaking its own record and several others from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Overall views of trailers between subsequent ones usually decline, but Black Widow proved itself to be the exception. Black Widow's third trailer received over 70 million views in 24 hours, whereas its second trailer gained 57 million views in a day, as reported by THR. The MCU trailer also broke viewership records held by Black PantherWandaVision and Loki.

In its first 24 hours of release, Black Panther received 48 million trailer views, with Wandavision pulling in 53 million views and Loki totaling 36 million views.

Black Widow's third trailer showcased Black Widow's history, using clips from other MCU films leading up to her sacrificial moment in Avengers: Endgame. The film is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and will provide viewers insight into Black Widow's backstory, including her training in the Red Room and her relationships with her non-blood-related family. New footage of the villain Taskmaster was featured in the trailer, as well as a closer look at Stranger Things' David Harbour as Red Guardian.

Black Widow will be the first MCU theatrical release since Spider-Man: Far From Home in July 2019. The two-year gap between MCU films was caused by theater shutdowns due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Initially scheduled for a May 2020 release, Black Widow was delayed to Eternals' initial release date of Nov. 6, 2020. Then, the film was delayed until May 2021. About one week before its third trailer's release, the MCU film was given its current release date of July 9.

The Scarlet Johansson starring film will premiere simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access -- a move which has reportedly upset several theater chains. "We haven't made any threats," AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. Chief Executive Adam Aron said in reference to Black Widow's release plan. However, he added, "It is widely known that AMC has threatened not to play movies if we could not find business terms that we found acceptable." Disney did not comment on its current relationships with theater chains.

Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access July 9.
