Regé-Jean Page, the breakout star of Bridgerton, held firm to his one-season agreement and passed on an offer to make guest appearances in Season 2.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Page was offered $50,000 an episode to guest-star in three to five Season 2 episodes. The show, which premiered in December on Netflix, quickly became the streamer's biggest hit, reaching 82 million households in four weeks.
Page starred in Bridgerton's first season as Simon Bassett, the love interest of Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor. The show, set in London in the 1800s, is based on the novels by Julia Quinn. Each season, like the books, will focus on a different Bridgerton sibling. Season 2, based on the novel The Viscount Who Loved Me, will tell the story of Daphne's brother Anthony.
Not being tied to a long-term commitment appealed to Page, who said, "[I thought] 'That's interesting,' because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on." Even so, Chris Van Dusen, Bridgerton's showrunner, wanted Page and Dynevor back even before the show launched: "I would love to be able to see them again and also at the same time explore the other brothers and sisters of the family." Season 2 began production in March.
Page recently completed the film The Gray Man and signed to Dungeons & Dragons. But sources say Bridgerton producers hope he may return for Season 3.
Bridgerton stars Phoebe Dynevor, Jonathan Bailey, Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Ruby Barker, Golda Rosheuvel, Luke Thompson, Luke Newton, Ruth Gemmell, Polly Walker, Charithra Chandran, Rupert Young and Julie Andrews. Season 2 has yet to receive a release date.
