Challenge of the Super Sons: How the Medieval Justice League Saved Their Lives

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Challenge of the Super Sons #12 by Peter Tomasi, Evan Stanley, Luis Guerrero and Rob Leigh, on sale now.

In Challenge of the Super Sons, Jon Kent and Damian Wayne haven't relied on the Justice League for help, rather they've been saving their seniors instead. Tasked by the sorceress, Rora, they've been using the Doom Scroll to save the Leaguers from traps set by Vandal Savage and Felix Faust across the timestream, making sure the heroes don't know what happened so that history doesn't get altered.

Butin Challenge of the Super Sons #12, the tables are turned when the boys are saved by a bumbling medieval version of the League in a flashback that reveals how their mission actually got underway.

In the past, the Super Sons are taken prisoner by Savage and Faust after trying to free Rora, who's been enslaved and used for various mystical projects. By capturing the kids, the tyrants now probe their minds, gathering intel on the League so that they can stage a trap. However, Rora decides to use her magic in the enchanted forest to summon help, making it seem like she'll be bringing the League in from the holes in space and time.

Shockingly enough, there's a renaissance fair version of the League that shows up to do battle with Faust and Savage outside their castle. The boys are truly stunned and left wondering if Rora broke the timestream. More so, they can't believe how their seniors are dressed and speaking. It's very comedic to see them like this, with coats, hats, capes and ridiculous outfits. But like clockwork, Savage and Faust engage the heroes, looking to put Superman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Hawkgirl and a Tin Man-looking Cyborg down for good.

As they battle, we discover this is actually a trap Rora laid down herself. She's disguised elves, dwarves and trolls from the forest and shape-shifting them into the League to distract the fiends. It's a big sacrifice they're making but they're loyal to Rora, and know how important this distraction will be to free the boys. Rora knew this would play on their ego and draw the tyrants out, allowing her to quickly free the Super Sons.

The story comes full-circle as she presents to them the Doom Scroll and reveals the start of their journey, pitching them through the timestream to kick the book off. It ends with the Super Sons barrelling through time and Rora held hostage. As Robin and Superboy make the trip back, they can't help but see the irony of having to hunt down the League now.
