Krista Vernoff, who worked as a writer on The WB's original Charmed series, recently opened up about her decision to leave the show in Season 5.
"I signed on because Charmed was a girl-power show, and about halfway through [Season 5] there was an episode where Alyssa Milano comes out in mermaid pasties and there was a huge spike in male viewership," Vernon recalled in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The episode Vernoff referred to was Season 5, Episode 1, titled "A Witch's Tail: Part 1."
The writer added that, every episode after that seemed to be fueled by the question "How are we getting the girls naked this week?," and that she no longer wanted to be a part of that narrative.
"And they were throwing money at me, and the number keeps going up, and there's all this pressure," Vernon continued. "And all I can think is, 'I'm creating something that's now bad for the world, and I've had enough bad for the world in my life.'"
Vernoff wrote for The WB's Charmed from 2000-2004. The original series starred Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty at the Halliwell sisters, aka the Charmed Ones. Rose McGowan joined the series as a younger half-sister named Paige Matthews in Season 4 after Doherty exited the show.
After Vernoff's comments about her decision were published, the writer took to Twitter to clarify some of her comments, specifically the one about Charmed being "bad for the world."
"I want to clarify here for Charmed fans and also for my colleagues from Charmed who I love and admire, that I do not believe that the show was bad for the world," she tweeted. "I felt that the objectifying notes were bad for the world — and were demoralizing for me. All love to Charmed."
Following her exit from Charmed, Vernoff joined the writing team for Bryan Fuller's short-lived Fox dramedy Wonderfalls. She currently serves as showrunner for Grey's Anatomy and Station 19.
In other Charmed-related news, The CW's series reboot just added Mareya Salazar as a recurring character. The transgender actor will portray the sisters' second cousin Joséfina, who is described as a "strong, opinionated young woman who shows up on [The Charmed One's] doorstep with surprises and secrets." Salazar is the second trans actor to join the Charmed cast, following JJ Hawkins, who portrays Kevin.
Charmed stars Sarah Jeffery, Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz, Rupert Evans, Jordan Donica and Poppy Drayton. New episodes air on The CW on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
