The search for the son of Poseidon has begun.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians author Rick Riordan announced that the search for the Disney+ series' titular star has begun. "The casting process is now in its earliest stages, which means we have put out a casting call to the talent agencies for an actor to play Percy Jackson." he wrote on his website.
According to Riordan, the crew is looking to cast an actor who can "play 12." The plan is to have the character age up as the series progress through its five seasons — based on the five books it is based on — assuming the series gets so lucky. Riordan also noted that this is a "preliminary search" and that there is a long way to go before any decisions are made.
The series is also looking to cast main character Grover the satyr and Annabeth Chase, daughter of the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare, Athena. However, those casting processes have not yet to begin. Riordan said that those decisions will be based in part on who the series chooses as Percy.
Riordan also stressed that the casting call is not specific to any ethnicity and that "We are looking for the best person who can embody the character we all know and love from the books." The casting team will be following Disney’s company policy, which says, "We are committed to diverse, inclusive casting. For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to disability, gender, race and ethnicity, age, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other basis prohibited by law."
Written by Riordan, Percy Jackson & the Olympians is a five-book series that follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, the half-son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, as he fights against the forces of the Titan Kronos with his allies from Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods. Throughout the series, he encounters heroes and villains of Greek mythology, including the Minotaur, the Oracle, Atlas, Daedalus, Hades, Zeus and Area, among others.
The books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies and spawned several sequel book series and spinoffs. The Heroes of Olympus continues the story of Percy and his friends, and introduces the Roman counterparts to the Greek gods, while The Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard are based on Egyptian and Norse mythologies, respectively.
This will not be the first time Percy Jackson is portrayed in live-action. Logan Lerman starred as the hero in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and its sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Both found moderate success at the box office but received mixed reviews for deviating from the books.
