Mavis is the original leader and one of the founders of the Fairy Tail guild. Despite being in a death-like state and trapped in a giant lacrima, Mavis is able to use her magic to appear before the members of her guild. She offers guidance, strategies, and even has the ability to protect its members by using powerful magic.
Although she acts like a child and permanently has the appearance of one, she can get serious when it comes to the safety of her comrades. Mavis led a very interesting life before Makarov Dreyar was even born, and although she explained her past to the current members of her guild, there are a few things about her that are easily missed.
10 She Had A Tough Childhood But Remained Positive
After losing her parents, Mavis was forced to work off the debts that they had collected from the Red Lizard guild. She became their janitor and was treated horribly by the members. However, despite the cruel treatment, she never allowed herself to cry.
After the Red Lizard guild is attacked, she lived her life accompanied by a single person that she unknowingly created with her illusion magic. Thanks to the presence of her illusion, she was never lonely.
9 She Has A Sharp Eye
Mavis is good at spotting things that others would easily miss. When she and Yuri Dreyar were trapped in a magic circle by a member of the Blue Skull guild, Mavis doesn't panic.
She quickly notices that one of the glyphs in the imprisonment magic is wrong, so she steps out of the circle with confidence. When Mavis first met Zeref, she was able to deduce what kind of magic he used, and the curse-like nature of said magic.
8 She Never Discovered That She Had A Son
After entering a death-like state from a shared kiss with Zeref, Mavis bore his child through some unknown means. When Mavis eventually returned to life, she had no idea that she had a son.
Their son, August, remained at Zeref's side until he became an old man, but he never had the courage to tell his parents about his existence. An illusion of him does call her Mother before he dies, but he disappears before she can see who is talking to her.
7 Mavis Obtained Her Title As A Master Strategist Through War
After forming the Fairy Tail guild, the Second Trade War began, a war in which feudal lords fought over the country's trading rights. Mercenary and guild mages were used as soldiers, making Mavis an unwilling participant.
Although those around her were aware of her keen intellect, she earned the title of Fairy Tactician after winning a major battle. She thought over her strategies so carefully that she came up with over 40 different plans that would help them achieve victory.
6 Saving Her Friend Got Her Cursed Like Zeref
Zeref was cursed by Ankhseram, the god of life and death, for researching and creating means to bring someone back to life. He created magic to travel through time as well as magic that could resurrect the dead. As a result, he was cursed with immortality.
Additionally, the more he cared about people, the more others died around him. Mavis acquired the same curse due to using an incomplete version of Law to save Yuri, a spell that requires 10 years to master. She did not create forbidden magic, but for some reason, her actions garnered the same punishment.
5 Her Friend Zera Becomes One Of The Fairies They Grew Up Hearing About
Mavis became enamored with fairies because her parents would tell her stories about them, including how they never approached children who cry. She took these stories seriously and longed to meet a fairy.
When she encountered Yuri, she asked him to take her to see fairies. The search for these mythical creatures was associated with grand adventures, even becoming the basis of Fairy Tail's name. Zera is revealed to have become a fairy at the end of the series, indicating that she got a happy end just like Mavis did.
4 Mavis Named Makarov After A Prince She Read About
After a bloody war, Mavis became desensitized to the violence and numb to the number of deaths that had occurred. This made her curse to take the lives of the people around her remain dormant for a while.
However, at Makarov's birth, Mavis was asked to name him. She named him after a character from a story she had read, and in this moment, he made her remember the value of human life. The curse ends up taking the life of his mother, forcing Mavis to flee in horror.
3 Mavis Is Good At Acting
As a master of illusory magic, Mavis had to be good at acting in order to fool others. When using her magic, Mavis carries herself with the confidence of someone who has created something real and tangible.
She is able to intimidate a bartender with her illusions and was even able to create a convincing illusion of an army of soldiers. The entire time, she acted like she had the upper hand, convincing almost all of the Blue Skull members that the army was real.
2 She Modified Law To Fairy Law
Law was a black magic that Mavis learned from Zeref, intended to instantly defeat those that the user considers to be an enemy. Using an incomplete version of it can result in the user being cursed or killed.
Fairy Law is an improvement of Law, as it eliminates the consequences of using Law. Unfortunately, the magic is still meant to be a weapon used only in the direst of circumstances. Using this spell costs some of the user's lifespan, and the cost is higher if there are more targets.
1 Hiro Mashima Enjoyed Making Changes To Mavis' Story To Surprise The Readers
Hiro Mashima, the creator of Fairy Tail, originally intended to make Mavis an old man. When he realized that Mavis is a girl's name, he changed Mavis' design. He noted in an interview that he liked surprising the fans, who never expected the founder to be a little girl.
He also enjoyed the fact that many fans were also surprised by the romance between Mavis and Zeref. He was surprised in turn once he realized that Mavis was an extremely popular character.
