The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Adepero Oduye said that her character Sarah Wilson knew that the U.S. government would betray her brother Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).
Oduye shared with THR what was on Sarah's mind when she learned that John Walker (Wyatt Russell) would take up Cap's shield, right after the U.S. government promised Sam that Cap's shield would be kept in a Steve Rogers memorial. "Even though you know bad things happen and have happened, such as disenfranchisement, there's that human part of you," she said. "I don’t know if it’s hope or what to call it -- but once you’re hit over the head again with what you already knew, you feel a little bit stupid for being shocked or surprised."
"Then you say, 'What else did I think would happen?' So I imagine that's what's going on for Sarah at that moment, particularly because it's attached to her brother who she loves so much, and knows he does this work," she stated. "There was all this interest to see that it went in a way that she both maybe expected but was also irked by, surprised by, saddened by or angered by because of her attachment to her brother," Oduye added.
At the end of Falcon and Winter Soldier's premiere episode, Sam Wilson learned that Cap's shield would not be kept out of the government's hands, as promised. Although the start of the episode showed him memorializing the shield and willfully stepping away from the Captain America mantle and shield, a news broadcast, later on, showed that the government handed Cap's shield to John Walker -- who is ill-fated to become US Agent in Marvel Comics.
In 1972, Sarah Wilson debuted as a Marvel character in Captain America #134. Co-created by writer Stan Lee and artist Gene Colan, Sarah Wilson initially served as a confidant for Sam Wilson as he took on more heroic roles. Throughout her appearances in the comics, Sarah remains a moral compass for Sam -- being a support system no matter if he's Captain America or running for congress -- while also simultaneously, raising and nurturing a family of her own after the death of her husband.
Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. New episodes debut on Fridays on Disney+.
