WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Final Space Season 3, Episode 5, "All The Moments Lost" which aired Saturday on Adult Swim.
After two and a half seasons of detailed world-building, Final Space has finally given audiences the backstory of Quinn Ergon, the tough-as-nails ex-commander of the Infinity Guard. Quinn had spent more time in final space than any other crew member of the Galaxy 2, and her space-sickness has come to its breaking point by having Quinn relive one of her most painful moments: losing her sister, Avery.
The episode launched the team into a black hole-like singularity that was pulling the Galaxy 2 inside of it. While they tried to use the energy from the singularity in order to power the lightfold engine, it seemed to have some negative effects, including a dangerously high gravity shift. It also activated hidden memories about Quinn's childhood, introducing Avery, who was briefly mentioned in Season 1, Episode 5. Avery is Quinn's younger sister, and she was forced to compete with her by their mother, a high ranking member of the Infinity Guard.
While Quinn's mother made a small appearance in the episode, her overpowering force was vibrant. She's stern, strict and wants the best for her daughters, needing them to be physically and mentally strong. After Avery almost drowned during a race between her and Quinn, their mother threw Quinn into an Infinity Guard morgue, forcing her to look at all the dead soldiers in an attempt to instil guilt within her. Her fear of losing anyone, especially another soldier, made Quinn the person she grew up to be, untrusting and feeling as if she alone has to save the world. During her travels with Gary, she had to unlearn these traits and start trusting him and the others in order to save the galaxy.
There's an interesting contrast between Quinn's upbringing and Gary's. Quinn grew up in the Infinity Guard and was trained to become a commander, but this episode showed she did not want to be a member of the Guard. However Gary grew up romanticizing the idea of the Infinity Guard since his father was a pilot.
Where they differ lies in their predetermined paths. Nightfall's version of Gary became a member of the Infinity Guard, following his father's footsteps, but the Gary audiences know does not get that opportunity, as his father died during the first tear in final space, and his mother abandoned him at a young age. Gary lost the chance to be a member of the Guard, so he resorted to a life of crime to stay alive while Quinn pushed aside her feelings in order to become a commander.
"All The Moments Lost" also expanded on Quinn's desire to work alone by showing what happened to her sister. During a battle, Quinn tried to advise Avery not to run into gunfire, but their competitive nature had her ignore her sister's warning and jump into the center of the crossfire. As of this episode, Avery is missing and presumed dead. This could further explain Quinn's cold nature towards working with others in the start of the series as her biggest childhood fear came true.
The episode ended with Quinn fully succumbing to the mysterious lava-like disease overtaking her body. Before the episode aired, Olan Rogers posted a mid-season trailer on twitter that showed Quinn holding Nightfall's helmet and a drill going through her head, alluding to a potential implant that could help control her disease. Nightfall sacrificed herself to get the team into final space, but the trailer could hint at Quinn becoming Nightfall, having to go back in time and start all over again.
Created by Olan Rogers, Final Space stars Olan Rogers, Tom Kenny, Tika Sumpter, Fred Armisen, Steven Yuen, David Tennant and Coty Galloway. Season 3 airs Saturdays on Adult Swim.
