HBO announced plans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Game of Thrones premiere by launching its The Iron Anniversary campaign this month.
Beginning April 5, the month-long Game of Thrones celebration is aimed to engage passionate fans of the hit series and to attract a new audience to the upcoming Game of Throne prequel series, House of the Dragons, which is scheduled to begin production this year.
As part of the celebration, HBO Max launched a GOT spotlight page, which will roll out personalized curations, a binge-watching marathon, special-edition products, and a variety of other Thrones-related content throughout April. Among the exclusive content is an introduction to the Game of Thrones world and characters, as well as 150 videos of behind-the-scenes extras, cast interviews and previously-unseen clips and trailers.
Starting April 10, HBO will launch the "Game of Thrones" MaraThrone, which will see all episodes of Season 1 airing on HBO2 beginning at 10 a.m. ET. The MaraThrone will also kick off a fundraising challenge for fans to binge-watch all 73 episodes of the series on HBO Max.
During the two week challenge, GOT cast members will rally fans to contribute to one of 10 noble causes: Women for Women International, World Central Kitchen, Conservation International, International Rescue Committee (IRC), UNICEF, FilmAid International, SameYou, Royal Mencap Society, National Urban League and The Trevor Project.
Participants in the MaraThrone challenge will be able to binge the series following six unique "routes" -- curated collections focused on the entire series, the Mother of Dragons, Arya's journey to Braavos, the best battles, the rise of the Army of the Dead and the biggest spoilers. A group of superfans will receive a custom MaraThrone kit featuring viewing essentials.
HBO will wrap up the celebration by surprising three couples who were married in Westeros-themed ceremonies with special anniversary gift packages. Each package will include Game of Thrones-branded barrels of wine, custom chalices and elaborate cakes designed in partnership with local bakeries to represent the houses of Targaryen, Stark and Lannister.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products and its licensing partners have also teamed up to create a line of special-edition products in honor of The Iron Anniversary. Here are the items being released as part of the festivities:
- A one-of-a-kind Imperial egg by FabergĂ©, the world’s most iconic artist jeweler, inspired by Daenerys Targaryen, and co-designed by series Emmy Award-winning costume designer Michele Clapton. The egg includes a miniature crown designed by Ms. Clapton, which represents the crown Daenerys would have worn had she taken the Iron Throne.
- Mikkeller, the Danish craft beer company, have launched a range of beers inspired by the series, that will let fans all over the world celebrate one stein at a time. Fans can cheer with the first beer in the assortment called “Iron Anniversary IPA.”
- Pop culture products leader Funko have unveiled a new iron-textured limited-edition assortment of fan-favorite “Game of Thrones” Pop! vinyl collectibles and new figures based on Arya Stark, Khal Drogo, and many more. Available for pre-order now at retailers everywhere.
- Game of Thrones: Complete Collection is available to own on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD and through select digital retailers. The complete series is also available to stream on HBO Max.
News of The Iron Anniversary came weeks after HBO confirmed it's working on three more Game of Thrones spinoffs. The three series are tentatively titled Sea Snake, Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships, with Sea Snake being the furthest along in development.
Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and Kit Harington. All eight seasons are available to stream on HBO Max.
