HBO's Parasite Series Is a New Story, Not a Remake of the Film

Director Adam McKay recently unveiled more narrative details about his collaboration with director Bong Joon-ho on the upcoming TV adaptation of Parasite for HBO.

As reported by Collider, McKay spoke to Josh Horowitz on his podcast 'Happy Sad Confused' about Parasite and its relation to the acclaimed Best Picture winner's story. "We're just having the best time," McKay revealed. "We've just staffed up with an incredible writers' room. I basically outlined the series with director Bong during the quarantine, with him overseeing."

Describing this Parasite as "an an original series," McKay explained, "It's in the same universe as the feature, but it's an original story that lives in that same world." He also talked about working with the famed South Korean director, stating, "Occasionally in life, you get very lucky, and for me to get to work anywhere near director Bong's orbit — usually, when I hear people say 'I'm honored,' it sounds like bullshit to me, but I'm legitimately honored. And having a blast."

Bong Joon-ho's Parasite follows the Kim family, a lower-class family of four who strike on an opportunity for comfortable living when their son Ki-woo is hired as a tutor for the daughter of an upper-class household. Taking advantage of the Park family's privilege, Ki-woo, his sister Ki-jung and their parents successfully infiltrate the residence as seemingly respected servants and educators to make the Parks' lives easier, only to discover new secrets within that house which threaten their ruse.

Parasite won the 2019 Palme d'Or festival's acclaimed Golden Lion award before sweeping multiple categories at the 2020 Academy Awards, not only becoming the first non-English Best Picture winner, but also taking home Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film and Best Director for Joon-ho.

Alongside the Parasite show, McKay recently executive produced the HBO Max QAnon documentary series Q: Into the Storm and will release the upcoming Jennifer Lawrence-led Netflix comedy Don't Look Up sometime in 2021. Joon-ho, meanwhile, is currently an executive producer on TBS' Snowpierecer, a TV adaptation of his 2013 dystopian action film based on the graphic novel Le Transperceneige starring Chris Evans and longtime acting collaborator Song Kang-ho.

Parasite stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik and Park So-dam. The film is available to stream exclusively on Hulu.
