In a shonen series, it's generally expected of characters to be capable of some form of combat. Characters that aren't usually capable are only seen for maybe an episode at best and play only a minor role in a character's story. But that's not always the case—some characters have great importance to the overall development of the main characters and can't fight at all.
Other characters are sometimes capable of fighting but are never actually shown in combat. Instead, their abilities are simply hinted at, or they manage to escape from potential fights while barely displaying their skill. Hunter x Hunter, a series more about strategy than "who's stronger than who," epitomizes the idea that characters don't have to be what's traditionally believed to be "strong" to have importance in the plot.
10 Leroute Generally Manipulates Her Opponent's Mind Rather Than Getting involved in Fights
Early on in the series, the group meets a character named Leroute. A prisoner located in Trick Tower. Leroute’s goal is to try and slow down the prisoners on her route. Leroute doesn’t actually have any powers or even any strength that would require her to fight. Instead, she relies on her ability to understand people and manipulate them.
She gets into a match against Leorio, manipulating him into wasting as much time as possible to reduce her sentence. She’s successful as well, at least in so far as getting 50 hours taken off her sentence and allowing the exam takers to only have fifty hours remaining for themselves to escape the tower.
9 Saccho Kobayakawa Is Seen As More Of A Detective Than A Fighter
Another top-level Hunter and a member of the Zodiacs, Saccho has yet to be seen fighting anyone. He’s a top-level Hunter and is a “Problem Hunter,” which means he likely has the ability to fight people, especially since he’s a swordsman.
However, rather than spend most of his time fighting, he’s a part of the Intelligence Team when they agree to head into the Dark Continent. This means his abilities are best suited for things outside of combat, and normally he’s a detective which wouldn’t require him to get physical.
8 Cheadle Yorkshire Is Supposedly Powerful, But She's Never Shown In Combat
Cheadle Yorkshire is a member of the Zodiacs which means she’s completely capable of fighting. She was once described as Netero’s sparring partner, and since Netero is one of the most powerful people in the series, this means her power is incredible and she’s most likely stronger than most people in the series.
However, it’s not her job to battle and she’s been described as a leader. To date, no one’s seen her fight anyone, though Pariston Hill spent a lot of time challenging her ability to lead.
7 Leorio Often Avoids Fights & Instead Uses His Intellect & Charisma To Get Out Of Battles
This might sound ridiculous, but the purpose of Leorio isn’t to actually fight. Though the show has displayed Leorio’s abilities a few times, more often than not his goal is to avoid combat altogether. The character comes into as little combat as possible during the Hunter Exam, mostly getting by with his wits rather than his actual combat ability.
When he parts ways with the group after the Yorknew City storyline, it’s believed he wouldn’t be important again... but he gets thrown into the Zodiacs and actually almost becomes the head of the Hunter Association off his intelligence alone.
6 Mito Freecss Is The Adoptive Mother Of Gon But Spends Much Of Her Time In Whale Island
Mito Freecss is the closest thing Gon ever had to a mother. With Ging being literal trash and choosing to go exploring rather than raise his son, Mito was the person who raised him instead. She was responsible for taking care of him from the time he was two years old, and even originally told Gon he didn’t have any parents so he wouldn’t feel the need to look for them.
Mito isn’t seen much in the early arcs but she does make an appearance during the Yorknew City storyline and is a bigger part of the story now that Gon has returned to his home. Mito has decided to force him into doing school work to catch up with everyone his level, so hopefully, he’s much smarter by the time he decides to return to being a hero.
5 Light Nostrade Runs A Mafia Family & Uses Money To Get Ahead
Another character that’s very important during the Yorknew City storyline. There, he’s the head of the Nostrade crime family. He’s technically Kurapika’s boss, as Kurapika works as a bodyguard for Neon during the storyline.
However, Light has no actual combat abilities and relies on his power as a leader to get things done. Even that however isn’t something he obtained on his own. In actuality, Light became powerful by using his daughter Neon’s fortune-telling power to see the future and manipulate it to his own ends.
4 Milluki Zoldyck Is A Top-Tier Assassin But Chooses To Use His Hacking Talents Over Fighting
A member of the Zoldyck family, Milluki is perfectly capable of assassination but he goes about it a different way than the rest of his family. Milluki can’t fight at all —he’s physically weak, and spends most of his time at a computer.
But he’s also one of the smartest members of the family, and can easily hack his way into most places. He’s also the person who created Killua’s unique yo-yo weapons and is known for other inventions as well. His connection with the rest of the Zoldyck family is largely how he manages to stay out of trouble.
3 Komugi Was Unable To Fight But Used Her Nen To Make Her Unstoppable In Other Ways
Komugi was a young girl who was discovered by the Chimera Ants and managed to connect with the Chimera Ant King. Meruem's goal was to play against and master his skills of strategy in every famous game of strategy, with him generally mastering a game in a short period of time and easily toppling the champion shortly afterward.
Komugi however, was impossible to topple. Though she possessed no ability for combat, she did have a Nen restriction placed on her that allowed her to continuously improve at Gungi, no matter how good her opponent becomes.
2 Neon Nostrade Can See The Future But Needs Bodyguards
Neon Nostrade is one of the key characters of the Yorknew City arc. The character is something of a spoiled brat, due to being born to a mafia boss. Kurapika works for her because she has a habit of collecting body parts, which led to her buying a pair of eyes that belonged to a member of his clan.
Neon has no fighting ability, but she had a Nen ability known as Lovely Ghostwriter, which allows her to write poems that can see the future for people. Typically, the fortunes she shows can be avoided if people listen, which makes her incredibly valuable to the Nostrade clan.
1 Alluka Saved Gon's Life, But Her Special Skill Is In Granting Wishes
Killua’s younger sister is one of the most important characters of the 13th Chairman storyline that finishes off the series. The youngest of the Zoldyck family, Alluka has been possessed by a being from the Dark Continent that has the ability to grant wishes.
The rest of the Zoldyck family seems somewhat terrified of her because of her abilities, but Alluka is sweet and loves her older brother Killua. Though she has no fighting abilities, her power to grant wishes is what allows Gon to be restored to normal.
