Invincible Proves Omni-Man Isn't the Smartest Villain Around

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the sixth episode of Invincible, "You Look Kinda Dead," streaming now on Amazon Prime.

In the Invincible TV series, Nolan Grayson, aka Omni-Man, is taking shape as the series' big bad, sticking in line with what the comics did by coming off as an evil Viltrumite. He's lying to Cecil and the Global Defense Agency about killing the Guardians of the Globe, while also gaslighting his wife Deb and son Mark, so they can keep revering him as a hero. Ultimately, Omni-Man is definitely a sinister villain. However, the Invincible's latest episode proves that as powerful and charming as he is, Nolan isn't the smartest or slickest tyrant around.

Nolan's trying to close off leads that point to him as the murderer, but after Deb speaks with Damien Darkblood and uses his notes, she digs around home for evidence. This results in her finding a bag with Nolan's bloody costume. This was a stupid mistake on Nolan's part. Evidence like that shouldn't be left around, especially as it allows Deb to go to Art for testing.

There, Deb discovers the suit has the Guardians' blood on it, meaning Nolan fought and killed them. Although Deb wonders if they attacked first, Art's equipment confirms Nolan was the one who instigated the brawl. This now puts her in danger, as well as Art. And Damien got banished to hell as a scapegoat. Ultimately, this is a self-inflicted problem because Nolan still loves Deb, but by giving her the key to the case, he opens up the door for her telling Mark and taking his successor away. In other words, Nolan is destroying his family on his own accord.

It's possible the Invincible series could alter the source material, which had Mark finding out about his father's secret by hearing Nolan and a resurrected Immortal Man fighting and arguing over the assassinations. At least in the comics, Nolan covered his tracks well. On TV, he essentially leaves a smoking gun for Deb and Art to find. He could have hidden it somewhere else, tampered with the DNA at the lab or destroyed it totally, but it seems like it might be his ego's fault.

Nolan really isn't making any sense, which ties back into his initial hit on the Guardians. Considering the Invincible TV show made them more formidable than the comics where he slaughtered them in seconds without resistance, Nolan may have been better off killing them one by one. His attack lacked discretion. By jumping the group and almost getting killed when he retaliated, it seems he didn't think it all through. The fact he also let Mark get beat half to death by Battle Beast and allowed Cecil access to his boy's DNA, which could possibly be weaponized against him, further proves that Nolan constantly underestimates the people in his life.

Invincible stars Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey Griffin and Max Burkholder. The series is produced by Skybound, and executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert and Catherine Winder. New episodes are released Fridays on Amazon Prime Video.
