Expect John Constantine to be slightly less cynical than usual when DC's Legends of Tomorrow returns for its sixth season.
Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Grainne Godfree revealed to TVLine that, when the new season comes out, "We will see John Constantine in a new and more mysterious state than ever before… happy. Astra is no longer in Hell and John is cautiously optimistic about where things are with Zari."
As for the state of John's romance with Zari Tarazi, Godfree hinted at internal and external factors that could tip the scales on making this pairing work. "Although she and John are both cool customers who keep their feelings close to the vest, it's clear they have a chance at a real relationship here," she elaborated. "But first, they will have to battle aliens intent on taking over Earth, Zari's status as a social media celebrity, and John's own personal demons…"
John Constantine has been a series regular on Legends of Tomorrow since Season 4, partnering up with Sara Lance and her team to defeat and contain various magical creatures scattered across time. Eventually, this partnership led to him learning that Astra Logue -- the girl sent to Hell by Constantine's past actions -- had grown up among Hell's residents and now wanted revenge for him putting her there. Their complicated relationship would carry over into Season 5, with Astra initially sending "Encores" of famous historical villains back into their timelines for the Legends to fight, only to end up assisting them and Constantine in reassembling the Loom of Fate to save her mother.
Similarly, Legends' Season 4 magic-centric finale resulted in Zari's future dystopian timeline being overwritten, transforming her into a social media influencer from the year 2042 while reviving her brother Behrad as a Legend and Wind Totem wielder. Despite having no memory of the Waverider crew upon meeting them again, Zari agreed to help the Legends retrieve the Loom's pieces and, in the process, formed a romance with Constantine. Her original self eventually returned in the episode "The One Where We're Trapped on TV" to help her friends defeat the Fates but, after realizing that being there threatened Behrad's existence, chose to remain inside the Totem so he can survive alongside Zari's alternate counterpart.
DC's Legends of Tomorrow stars Caity Lotz, Dominic Purcell, Nick Zano, Tala Ashe, Matt Ryan, Olivia Swann, Jes Macallan, Adam Tsekhman, Shayan Sobhian, Lisseth Chavez and Raffi Barsoumian. Season 6 premieres Sunday, May 2 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
