In a new interview about the upcoming second half of Lucifer's fifth season, co-showrunner Joe Henderson suggested it might not be necessary for the demon Mazikeen to get a soul.
"Oh, I love that question. That's a great question," Henderson told Word Balloon when asked about the state of Mazikeen's soul. "Because the answer is, it's only important if it's important to her. Right."
Henderson noted that everyone should be asking that same question, adding, "...Because what does having a soul mean? What does that look like? How does that validate you? How does an external thing validate the internal, or do you need it to? That’s the question.”
During the interview, Henderson also discussed where the relationship between Mazikeen and Chloe stands following the events of Season 4.
"You know what, Chloe and Maze were two people who were in pain and looking for someone else to fill a void," he explained. "And I think one of the things we wanted, in particular, is Maze, having only loved for the first time, misinterpreted that intimacy of friendship as something else, or more importantly, tried to turn it into something else when she felt that other person pulling away."
He ultimately concluded that the two "weren't dating" in Season 4 and "just became really close." He continued, "And by the way, I would have done a whole season of Maze and Chloe as partners. It was so much fun. They were so great together."
Ahead of Season 5b dropping on Netflix, Mazikeen actor Lesley-Ann Brandt teased she had already filmed her final scene alongside Lucifer himself, Tom Ellis, for the show's sixth and final season.
"Last Mazikeen and Lucifer scene ever," Brandt tweeted in early March from the show's set. "So many feels. Let's do this." She followed the first post with a tweet directed at Ellis, which, "What a scene. What a day. Thank you [Tom Ellis] for everything during action and cut and everything after as well. Forever, Your Mazikeen." The remaining eight episodes of Season 5 are scheduled to hit Netflix on Friday, May 28. It was previously announced that Season 6 will run for a total of 10 episodes, but it's unclear when those will start streaming.
