A new video shared by Marvel offers a crash course in the comic book history of Baron Zemo, one of the key players in Marvel Studios' ongoing Disney+ original series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Hosted by Langston Belton, the video was uploaded to the official Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel. It opens by explaining the history of the name Baron Zemo, which is "a title of German nobility passed down through 13 generations of no-goodniks."
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Marvel Comics' original Baron Zemo -- Dr. Heinrich Zemo -- made his first full appearance in 1964's Avengers #6 following a partial appearance in issue #4. The 12th member of the Baron Zemo line, Heinrich was the Nazis' top scientist during World War II, working alongside HYDRA's Baron Wolfgang von Strucker.
Created by Roy Thomas, Tony Isabella and Sal Buscema, Heinrich's son -- Helmut Zemo -- first appeared as the villain Phoenix in 1973's Captain America #168, swearing revenge against Cap for the death of his father. Helmut made his first full appearance as the new Baron Zemo in 1982's Captain America #276 after making a cameo in issue #275. He later appropriated the mantle of Citizen V in 1997's Incredible Hulk #449 in order to become the leader of the Thunderbolts.
Played by Daniel Brühl, a heavily-altered version of Helmut Zemo was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. In the MCU, Zemo is a former special operations soldier from Sokovia whose family is revealed to have perished during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, causing him to swear vengeance against the Avengers. Zemo successfully fractures the superhero team by framing Steve Rogers' best friend, Bucky Barnes, for bombing the United Nations. Zemo also reveals that, as the brainwashed Winter Soldier, Bucky had murdered Tony Stark's parents.
Brühl reprises his role as Baron Helmut Zemo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and even dons the character's signature mask from the comics. Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the Disney+ series follows Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes on a globetrotting adventure as they wrestle with Captain America's legacy. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiered on March 19 and is currently halfway through its six-episode run.
Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. New episodes debut on Fridays on Disney+.
