In Naruto, there are a handful of characters who didn't get to live up to their full potential. The story of Naruto revolves around times of war and hardship and many characters hope for peace, but the pain of the past holds the villages back.
There are a lot of characters that had their lives cut tragically short due to the constant fighting and there are characters who died before they could rise to the rank they could have reached. While Naruto gets to achieve his goal of becoming Hokage, there are others who aren't as lucky.
10 Rin Nohara: She Died At An Incredibly Young Age
Rin was a member of Team Minato. She was a healer who strove for peace. At a fairly young age, she managed to achieve the rank of chunin. She was on a mission with Kakashi when she was captured and forcibly turned into a jinchuriki.
Rin would be forced to attack Konoha as soon as she returned. Instead, she decided to die in order to protect the village. While she died a hero, she also died at an incredibly young age and never got to accomplish her goals or dreams.
9 Haku: He Never Pursued His Own Goals
Haku was born in the Land of Water and trained by Zabuza to be a shinobi. He was born with a powerful kekkei genkai that allowed him to use special ice-related jutsu.
Haku was a kind and gentle soul, giving up his life to save the person he loved most. Even though he was an incredibly strong fighter, he seemed to have no interest in being a shinobi. He never got the chance to pursue his own goals.
8 Dan Kato: He Died Without Making The Changes He Hoped For
Dan was a powerful shinobi who rose to the rank of Jonin. He was incredibly close to his girlfriend, Tsunade. Both he and Tsunade had lost a younger sibling due to fighting.
As a result of the deaths, Dan began to campaign for better medical access on the battlefield. He wanted to grow up to be Hokage, and Tsunade gave him her grandfather's necklace for luck. Unfortunately, he died before any of his dreams were fulfilled.
7 Hizashi Hyuga: He Never Got To Live Outside Of His Family's Shadow
Hizashi always lived in the shadow of his twin brother. When he was born, as the younger of the Hyuga twins, he was also born in the branch family. He would be treated as something of a servant in his family.
He was never able to pursue a life outside of his duty, but he gave his life to save his brother, and left his only son all alone. He never got to see the changes that would eventually be made to the Hyuga Clan. During his life, he was always stuck in the branch family.
6 Asuma Sarutobi: He Never Achieved The Greatness Of His Father
Asuma was the son of the Third Hokage. He achieved the rank of Jonin and was assigned to lead Team 10. Being the son of such a high-ranking ninja would have likely put a great deal of pressure on him from a young age.
People may have pushed him to follow in his father's footsteps, even though he didn't agree with his father. When he died, he gave the chance to help raise his only daughter.
5 Kushina Uzumaki: Her Death Robbed Her Of The Chance To Raise Her Son
Kushina was specially chosen to become the next jinchuriki of the Nine-Tails. She quickly made it clear that she wanted to become the next Hokage. Her fierce temper made her threaten anyone who doubted her.
After marrying Minato, she began to see a future with him. She dreamed that the two of them could establish peace and have a family together. Unfortunately, she died shortly after giving birth to Naruto and never got the chance to build a peaceful world for her son.
4 Fugaku Uchiha: He Never Achieved Greatness Outside Of His Own Clan
Fugaku managed to achieve greatness within his own clan, but he set his sights on something higher. He was the head of the Uchiha Clan and also ran the Konoha Military Police.
He was well-respected in his clan, and they considered him a valid candidate for the position of Hokage. Fugaku grew to dislike the terrible way the village tended to treat his clan. Under his leadership, the entire clan was slaughtered except for his two sons.
3 Obito Uchiha: His Hatred Warped Him Into Doing The Wrong Thing
Obito wanted to become Hokage and have a relationship with his teammate, Rin. Unfortunately, an accident on a mission would lead everyone to presume he had died. When he finally did return, he would have to watch the horrible death of the girl he loved.
He immediately turned against everything he had loved. He would cause a lot of trouble for the village, working towards achieving the goals of the man who saved him, Madara Uchiha. He could have worked towards peace for Rin's sake. While Obito was powerful, he could have used his power to help shape the village in a positive way.
2 Neji Hyuga: He Died Before Putting Any Of His Incredible Talent To Use
When Neji was first introduced, he had a lot of promise. He was a gifted genius and showed his incredible skill when he was introduced during the Chunin Exams. During the time skip, Neji became the first ninja in his generation to become a Jonin.
Despite all of his promise, he tragically died protecting his friend. He would have gone on to do amazing things if his life hadn't ended so soon. With his skills, he could have easily become Hokage. He could have also enacting change within his own family.
1 Itachi Uchiha: He Was Forced To Leave The Village Where His Contributions Were Forgotten
Itachi worked hard to protect his village and his brother. He made a lot of sacrifices to help make the world a better place, but everything he did was done in the shadows. Few people ever learned about the things he did.
His greatness was repeatedly stifled by the people around him. He could have gone on to become Hokage and reshape the village in a positive way. Unfortunately, he was reduced to spying on the Akatsuki and never learning their biggest secrets. He got swept up in the events of the time and never fulfilled his potential.
