Naruto: 10 Characters With The Most Traumatic Childhoods, Ranked

Perhaps the best part about the Naruto series was not its unique jutsu, cool fighting strategies, or God-level battles, but the complex characters who made the show what it is today. Every important character in the series had a unique past full of struggles, hardships, and heartaches in the war-torn shinobi world, and many of their stories tugged instantly at the heartstrings of fans.

10 Rock Lee Had To Fall Many Times Before He Could Stand

Rock Lee was born without the ability to perform Ninjutsu or Genjutsu, which were abilities that a shinobi was required to have. For this reason, Lee was bullied, but becoming a shinobi was his dream, and he was determined to prove that a person could become as good a shinobi as any, just by using Taijutsu.

His hard work paid off, and he was allowed to become a Genin, but he had to face yet another trauma when Gaara crushed his limbs and he was informed he would have to quit being a shinobi. Fortunately for him, Tsunade was able to save him with her medical skills.

9 Inari Witnessed The Public Execution Of His Hero, His Step-Father

Inari had never known his biological father, and he was saved from drowning by a fisherman, Kaiza, who became his hero and eventually, his step-father.

However, his happiness did not last long because, not soon after, Kaiza opposed Gato and ended up paying for it with his life. The young boy had to witness the public execution and death of his hero, an incident that traumatized him for many years to come.

8 Naruto Was An Orphan Who Was Rejected & Ridiculed By Everyone

Naruto’s parents had died protecting him and sealed the Nine-Tailed Fox within him just after he was born. He grew up on the streets of Konoha and was rejected and treated like trash by the villagers who were scared of him and blamed him for the deaths of their loved ones, even though it was not his fault at all.

During the initial years of his childhood, Naruto had no one, and he often had to go hungry for several days since he had no money, and was forced to learn how to take care of himself.

7 War In His Land Had Turned Nagato’s Life Into Hell

Nagato was a shinobi from the Hidden Rain Village, a place that was always strife with the horrors of war since its location made it the prime battleground for the Greater Nations. When he was just a child, two Hidden Leaf shinobi accidentally killed his parents in self-defense, not knowing they were civilians.

Enraged and saddened by this event, he activated his Rinnegan eye, one that Madara had secretly planted in him years ago. He became an orphan and wandered around the streets of his village with barely any food or help until he collapsed, and he was eventually taken in by Konan and Yahiko, who were also orphans of war.

6 Kimimaro Spent Most Of His Childhood In A Cage

Kimimaro was a boy born with the special abilities of Shikotsumyaku, which was a Kekkei Genkai possessed by rare members of his clan.

Kimimaro’s clan members only saw him as a frightening tool to merely be used in times of battle, and they feared his abilities so much that, when he was not fighting, he was kept locked in a cage, with very little food and water, and treated like an animal.

5 Kakashi Hatake Lost Everyone He Loved & Cared About

Kakashi grew up without a mother and he was only about 5 years old when his father committed suicide. As tragic as that was, it was nothing compared to what would come next. With Minato as his sensei, Rin and Obito were his comrades and friends whom he cared about.

Obito died (or so he thought) saving him from being crushed under a boulder and, not long after, he accidentally killed Rin with his Chidori when she deliberately came in front of him while he attacked. A few years later, his sensei was killed by the Nine-Tailed Fox, leaving no one in his life who he loved or who loved him.

4 Haku Watched His Father Kill His Mother & Had To Kill His Father In Self-Defense

Haku was born in the Land of Water to a pair of loving parents, in a land that had witnessed the horrors of war not too long ago.  Due to the war, the villagers were very wary of Kekkei Genkai users, with many of them being outright terrified of their abilities.

Haku’s mother had hidden her Kekkei Genkai ability from everyone, but when Haku began to show the same abilities, it was witnessed by his father. His father took a group of villagers and killed his own wife, and would have killed Haku if the little boy had not used his Ice Release abilities to kill his father and run away.

3 Gaara’s Trauma Began Before He Even Came Into The World

When he was in his mother’s womb, Gaara was deemed to be a perfect Jinchuuriki for Shukaku, the One-Tailed Beast, and the beast was sealed inside him while he was still in the womb. The birthing experience was too traumatic for his mother, and she died during childbirth. Gaara’s father only treated him as a weapon to be used for the village.

As a Jinchuuriki, Gaara also had to face the fear and hatred of the villagers, and his father kept him away from Temari and Kankuro, which resulted in him never feeling anyone’s love or care. When his father found Gaara to be useless as a weapon, he tried to have his own son assassinated by the only person who had cared for him until now, Yashamaru. Young Gaara could not understand why his uncle would do such a thing and lost control over Shukaku, which resulted in Yashamaru’s death. After this incident, his father tried to have him assassinated six more times, but all of those attempts failed.

2 Itachi Uchiha Had To Make The Horrible Decision Of Annihilating His Clan

When Itachi was just a child, he witnessed a lot of horrors and deaths during the Third Shinobi War, so he vowed to give his all to protect his village and maintain peace. When he was thirteen years old, he was ordered to massacre his entire clan and leave his home forever to protect his village.

This included murdering his own parents in order to protect his village from civil war and further bloodshed. He took all the blame on himself, was declared a rogue ninja of Konoha, and had to spend the rest of his life branded as a ruthless ninja who murdered his own clan.

1 Sasuke Uchiha’s Entire World Changed Within Just A Few Hours

When he was a child, Sasuke had a very loving family —he was blessed with kind parents and a talented elder brother who he looked up to. However, all of this changed the night Itachi massacred their entire clan, and he came home to find Itachi standing above the dead bodies of their parents.

In just a matter of a few hours, Sasuke became an orphan and had to experience a trauma that no child should have been subjected to. He eventually grew up sad, alone, and filled with hatred for his elder brother.
