Naruto: 10 Important Characters Who Aren't Ninja | CBR

The Naruto universe has many fascinating characters who shape its future as occupational shinobi. Whether good or evil, their actions comprise the bulk of the series and often define them as its most important individuals. This phenomenon is particularly pervasive in the Akatsuki and Kage, though it was also evident throughout the Fourth Ninja War.

However, many others aren't explicitly ninja that shapes the face of the planet through their actions. By identifying examples and the ways they've contributed to the world's future, we can best appreciate the validity of the path they've chosen.

10 Mifune Was A Samurai Who Hosted The Five Kage Summit

Mifune was a samurai from the Land of Iron who hosted the Five Kage summit. He is unique because though he participated in combat alongside the other nations, he is not a shinobi.

Consequently, the man's arsenal is limited through his swordsmanship, as illustrated through his battle against Hanzo the Salamander. Nonetheless, were it not for Mifune's gallantry and tenacity, the heroes, would have been forced to contend with a vicious shinobi warlord that stood down all three Sannin on his own.

9 Toneri Nearly Destroyed The World With Meteors

Toneri was an Otsutsuki member whose isolation on the moon ailed his soul. To remedy his loneliness and find a partner, he abducted Hinata Hyuga and attempted to take her as his bride since he wanted her Byakugan.

When Naruto came to confront him, he launched meteors at the planet and almost destroyed its villages. Were it not for the many shinobi defenders who had braced for such an occasion (including Sasuke). His carnage would have been unprecedented. After Hokage defeated him, he abandoned his mission and agreed to protect the world in a lonely vigil.

8 Kurama Was Naruto's Tailed Beast And Granted Him Immense Power

Kurama was the Nine-Tails and a being of immense power. He alone matched the composite strength of the other tailed beasts, allowing him to imbue Naruto with tremendous chakra during the Fourth Shinobi War.

However, his relationship with his host has not always been stellar. Naruto spent several years attempting to control him, accidentally harming Jiraiya and nearly Sakura since he lost himself to Fox's unimaginable potency and bloodlust.

7 Shukaku Nearly Destroyed The Leaf Village & Was Utilized By The Akatsuki

Shukaku was the One-Tailed beast and a monster who was once connected with Gaara. He was more openly malevolent than Kurama and nearly assisted Orochimaru in destroying the Leaf village before the future Kazekage's redemption.

Unfortunately, the creature would not be of considerable use to the heroes after its host had a change of heart. It was promptly captured by Deidara in the name of the Akatsuki, providing an unwitting tool in Nagato's quest to make the entire shinobi world experience the same pain that he did.

6 Gamabunta Was A Valuable Ally To Jiraiya & Naruto

Gamabunta was a warrior from Mount Myoboku and an invaluable ally to the efforts of Naruto and Jiraiya. He assisted in several crucial fights, such as the Toad Sage's battle against Orochimaru alongside Tsunade and against Pain during the conclusion of the Konoha invasion arc.

Additionally, Gamabunta was also responsible for facing down and helping to defeat Shukaku. Were it not for his presence, and Naruto would never have been able to overcome Gaara and set him on a more promising path.

5 Kaguya Nearly Dominated The Entire World With the Infinite Tsukuyomi

Kaguya Otsutuki was the original progenitor of chakra to the shinobi world. Betrayed by humans and made an outcast for her alien appearance, she attempted to reclaim her gift - much to the opposition of her sons.

Though they would defeat and expel her from the planet, Zetsu would pave the way for her return many years later by using Naruto and Sasuke. With the entire world subjugated under the hypnosis of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, only they were capable of saving everyone - and deciding the fate of the future.

4 Tazuna Began A Quest That Would Bring Team Seven Together

Tazuna was a carpenter commissioned to build a bridge in the Land of Mists. He understood the threat posed by Gato and requested Konoha's service, underplaying the danger that the mission entailed.

When Kakashi and his fledgling team arrived to assist him, they soon found themselves accosted by Zabuza and Haku - both shinobi beyond their skill. This necessitated perfect synergy if the group was to survive, building meaningful connections that Naruto and Sasuke would look back on in the future with nostalgia.

3 Zetsu Manipulated Madara & Many Other Global Catastrophes

Zetsu was an agent of Kaguya responsible for manipulating much of the world's most disastrous events. He would accomplish this by editing the Uchiha tablet to include the Infinite Tsukuyomi, providing Madara was a false mission that served his own ends.

Additionally, he groomed Obito's hatred of Konoha, facilitating his freedom only so that he could watch Kakashi impale Rin with a chidori. This was a deliberate act of manipulation, considering that the fatality could have been avoided (or properly explained) if the Obito was given freedom a day earlier.

2 Mikoto Was The Mother Of Two Prominent Shinobi

Mikoto was the mother of Sasuke and Itachi. Unlike Kushina, she was never an official kunoichi and did not protect the Leaf from its many external and internal threats.

Nonetheless, her children would dramatically alter the course of history. Itachi prevented a world war through the Uchiha massacre. Sasuke became an international fugitive (only to have a change of heart and protect Konoha once again after he had matured). Though Mikoto's presence in the story may have been minimal, it would have been unrecognizable without her.

1 Hagoromo Existed Before The Age Of Shinobi Began

Hagoromo was also known as the Sage of Six Paths and an ancestor to Naruto. Alongside Hamura, he helped defeat Kaguya and ensure that the world would not suffer under her wrath.

When Zetsu's plans neared fulfillment, and the Infinite Tsukuyomi had been cast, the Sage mustered what strength he had left to contact Naruto and Sasuke. In a final act of benevolence, he imbued them with the strength they needed to defeat his mother and what even greater threats lurked beyond the planet.
