Naruto: 5 Ways Hashirama's Cells Were Used For Good (& 5 They Were Used For Evil)

The Naruto series ended a few years ago, but it continues to be one of the most popular manga and anime properties in the world, and it managed to achieve this because the story was filled with positive messaging, engaging and interesting characters, and great action. The series also had a great world with a lot of history, and to this day, Hashirama Senju is a major part of that history, and he also happens to be one of the strongest ninja that ever lived.

Hashirama is viewed as a ninja god because of his immense chakra levels, but also because he used Wood Release, which happens to be one of the rarest chakra natures in existence. Wood Release is extremely versatile and powerful, which is why many people tried to replicate it by using Hashirama's cells, and although these cells have done some good, they have also been used for evil.

10 For Good: They Were Used To Rebuild The Leaf Village

Many believe that Hashirama was the best Hokage, and part of the reason for this is because he founded and helped to build the Hidden Leaf Village. He used his Wood Release to grow the thick forest that surrounds the village, and thanks to his cells, the village was able to be rebuilt after being completely destroyed.

When Pain used his Almighty Push to destroy the village, it was Yamato who used the Hashirama cells in his body to pump out wood that was used to rebuild countless homes and businesses, thus giving the villagers a place to go back to.

9 For Evil: Orochimaru Used Them In His Vile Experiments

Orochimaru is considered to be one of the strongest shinobi in history, but he will always be remembered for all of the terrible things he did while trying to learn every jutsu in existence. He grew up in the Leaf Village, but that did not stop him from abducting children and experimenting on them.

He kidnapped roughly 60 children, and he injected all of them with Hashirama's DNA. This proved to be a horrific experience, as all but one of the children managed to survive the experiments.

8 For Good: Those Experiments Led To Captain Yamato

The child who survived those experiments grew up to become Yamato, and because he survived, it meant that he was one of only a handful of shinobi in history who was able to use Wood Release. Yamato started out in the Root branch of the Leaf's Anbu, but he went on to befriend Kakashi and decided to leave the organization to join the main branch.

When Kakashi was sidelined, it was Yamato who stepped in to lead Team 7, and he went on to help Naruto a number of ways. His Wood Release may have not been as strong as the 1st Hokage's, but he was still able to use it to rebuild the village after Pain's assault.

7 For Evil: They Were Used To Create White Zetsu

Had the Akatsuki utilized Zetsu's abilities more efficiently, there is a good chance that the organization could have lessened its casualties. White Zetsu was actually a victim of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's Infinite Tsukuyomi, and after several hundred years, he was eventually pulled out of the Gedō Mazō statue by Black Zetsu.

It was also Black Zetsu who implanted some of Hashirama's cells into his body, which is why White Zetsu gained several useful supporting abilities. White Zetsu was carefree, playful, and extremely loyal, and it was thanks to him that the Akatsuki were able to gather important information, and he also helped to execute Madara's Eye of the Moon plan.

6 For Good: They Awakened The Rinnegan, Which Technically Saved The Leaf Village

Very few powers can rival the Rinnegan in terms of overall versatility and strength and unless someone belongs to the Ōtsutsuki Clan or comes in contact with the Sage of Six Paths, they cannot awaken it. Madara managed to awaken it though, and he did this by adding Hashirama's DNA to his body.

It only worked because Hashirama was a reincarnation of the Sage's son, just like Madara was, and the legendary Uchiha went on to then transplant his eyes into Nagato. Although the Rinnegan was used for evil, they did a lot of good too, because if it weren't for those eyes, Nagato would have never been able to bring hundreds of villagers back to life after the Leaf Village was destroyed.

5 For Evil: They Were Used To Create The Original Tobi

Much like White Zetsu, Tobi was an original victim of the first Infinite Tsukuyomi, and he was also removed from the Gedō Mazō statue by Black Zetsu who modified him by using Hashirama's cells. While serving as Madara's minion, he befriended a young Obito Uchiha, and he actually attached himself to Obito's body for some time.

Tobi started out as a playful character, but he became a lot more serious when he reappeared during the Fourth Great Ninja War. When he showed up on the battlefield, he did so while encasing Yamato's entire body, and he basically forced the Leaf Shinobi to attack the Allied Shinobi Forces.

4 For Good: They Were Used To Save Obito's Life

Obito spent the majority of the series pretending to be both Tobi and Madara, and he was responsible for a lot of heartache throughout the ninja world. In the end, though, it was made quite clear that Obito was nothing more than a manipulated pawn, and when he saw the error of his ways, he helped Naruto and his team save the world.

Obito was believed to be dead because the right side of his body had been completely crushed, but Madara found him and ordered White Zetsu to save him. Obito was saved because Madara placed some of Hashirama's DNA into his body, and if this had not happened, Obito would have never been able to sacrifice himself to stop Kaguya.

3 For Evil: Danzō Used Them For His Own Nefarious Purposes

Danzō wanted nothing more than to protect the Leaf Village, but this need caused him to do some horrible things. He was fully aware of Orochimaru's experiments, and he actually aligned himself with the enemy shinobi in order to augment his own body.

As a result, Orochimaru surgically attached Shin Uchiha's arm to Danzō, and he then amplified the arm's strength by adding Hashirama's DNA to it. There were about a dozen Sharingan imbedded in the arm's flesh. and the cells allowed Danzō to use the Sharingan's Izanagi technique, but he mainly wanted the cells to one day deal with Naruto and the Nine-Tails.

2 For Good: They Were Used To Suppress The Nine-Tails

For a long time, the Tailed Beasts were seen as nothing more than monsters who could be captured and turned into weapons, but they were actually individuals who had their own names, feelings, and personalities. That being said, the Tailed Beasts often went on rampages, either because they were provoked, or because they were forced to.

Hashirama was able to manipulate, suppress, and absorb chakra, which allowed him to subdue and take control of Tailed Beasts. Someone who has access to his cells may not be able to fully control a Tailed Beast, but they can subdue a Jinchūriki who lacks control, as displayed by Yamato when he stopped Naruto from going on a rampage in his Four-Tailed state.

1 For Evil: Madara Used Them To Become A God

Madara's strength is legendary, and his greatest rival was in fact Hashirama, a man who he also happened to envy. During their final battle, Madara managed to obtain a portion of Hashirama's DNA, and when he used Izanagi to reverse his death, he implanted the cells into his body to heal his injuries.

Madara also used these cells to create the White Zetsu army that killed so many shinobi during the Fourth Great Ninja War, but it also allowed him to become the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki, which gave him the power of the Sage of Six Paths, and he used that power to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi on the entire planet.
