WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 10, of Pennyworth, "The Lion and Lamb," which aired Sunday on EPIX.
Since its premiere, Pennyworth has featured a grounded story. Sure, the EPIX series may take place in a version of the DC Universe and Season 2 may be built around a war in London that never happened, but it has kept to a world of spies and soldiers. However, all of that changes in the Season 2 finale, "The Lion and Lamb," when, in the closing minutes of the episode, Pennyworth finally introduces its first super-powered character by transforming Gulliver Troy into a super-soldier.
In the Season 2 finale, Alfred learns that the "Project Stormcloud" weapon is hidden inside a church in London. He and Dave Boy rush to the church to find the bomb and hopefully disarm it, but when they arrive, they are pinned down by gunfire. Fortunately, they get help from an unexpected source: their old SAS Captain, Gulliver Troy.
Troy has been a recurring presence in Pennyworth's second season. At the start of the season, Alfred joined Troy's crew of thieves, only for the two to eventually become enemies after Alfred slept with Troy's wife. They nearly fought to the death in a confrontation that Alfred won, but rather than kill his old captain, Alfred opted to let him live. Now, in the season finale, a wounded Troy sets out to finish Alfred, but he changes his mind after finding out about the "Stormcloud" bomb.
After Troy rescues Alfred and Dave Boy, Lucius Fox attempts to diffuse the bomb, but it's too late. The weapon is activated, and the quartet only has a few moments before it explodes. Alfred volunteers to swallow the "Stormcloud" capsule, in the hopes that this will contain the weapon. However, Troy heroically stops him and takes his place, making the ultimate sacrifice to save London. Inside Troy, the bomb is contained, and, for a moment, the SAS Captain appears to be dead. But as his body is moved inside a containment van, the energy of "Stormcloud" creates a reaction inside him. In truth, Troy isn't dead, and the weapon triggers a transformation that gives him superpowers.
Troy is next seen six months later, as the war between the English League and the New Raven Alliance rages on in London. Alfred joins the battle on the frontlines, and he is flanked by Gulliver Troy, who is now outfitted with a bulky armor that keeps him alive and allows him to harness the powers of "Stormcloud." His skin is now colored blue, just like the weapon, and he is able to shoot blasts from his hands that kill the Raven soldiers.
Gulliver Troy doesn't exist in the comics, which makes him an original creation for Pennyworth, and now, he has become an even more important figure as the series' first super-powered character. He may not have a codename just yet, but it feels looks like "Stormcloud" would be the perfect moniker.
Developed by former Gotham collaborators Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, Pennyworth stars Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth, Ben Aldridge as Thomas Wayne, Jason Flemyng as Lord Harwood, Paloma Faith as Bet Sykes, Ryan Fletcher as Dave Boy, Hainsley Lloyd Bennett as Bazza, Jessica Ellerby as the Queen and Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox.
