Picard: Patrick Stewart's Series Wasn't Even Meant To Be Made

Star Trek: Picard writer Akiva Goldsman revealed that the hit Paramount+ Star Trek series led by Patrick Stewart almost didn't come to fruition.

When asked if the previously-announced Star Trek spinoff series, Section 31, is still going to happen, Goldsman told THR, "I don't know. I believe so. "[Executive producer] Alex Kurtzman has a plan. You know, Picard wasn't supposed to be a series."

Goldsman added that the whole premise behind the Picard series "was just a one-off scene in a Short Trek." He added, "He wasn't even going to be played by Patrick Stewart. They were going to have a young Picard at the end of a short we were making up."

However, the idea to create a series centered on retired admiral Jean-Luc Picard came about when Kurtzman asked the question, "What if it was Patrick Stewart?... What if it wasn't one scene?" Goldsman also revealed that "Alex has a plan, and it's pretty cool."

Fans of Star Trek will recall that Section 31 is the mysterious intelligence agency that operates behind the scenes of the Federation. Rumors that a spinoff about the agency first gained traction after Star Trek: Discovery appeared to set one up in Season 3, Episode 10.

In January 2021, it was officially confirmed that a spinoff about the dark Starfleet organization was in the works. At the time, executive producer Heather Kadin revealed, "[Section 31 is] in active development. So that’s obviously a huge priority; Michelle [Yeoh's] character is so unique, and you’ve never seen that before. Again, it has to fall under the guise of, 'is this [show] a unique space we haven't explored yet?'"

In the meantime, Paramount+ recently dropped the first official trailer for Season 2 of Picard, which is set to premiere in 2022. The teaser took fans on a tour of the retired admiral's home and study, featuring multiple artifacts, such as a clock, a book and model ships. The trailer also showcased a burning Queen of Hearts playing card with a special focus on the letter Q. The close-up more or less confirmed the return of the fan-favorite Star Trek: The Next Generation villain played by John de Lancie.

Star Trek: Picard stars Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway. The first season is available on Paramount+.
