Snowpiercer's BRUTAL Season 2 Finale, Explained | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the two-part Season 2 finale of Snowpiercer, "The Show Must Go On" and "Into The White."

Season 2 of Snowpiercer has been quite brutal with Sean Bean's Wilford taking back his 1,034 cars, adding the Eternal Engine back to Big Alice. With everything under his command once more, though, he's letting his pride and vanity rule, which is causing him to not notice certain things brewing right under his nose. This leads to shifting allegiances, key alliances and also, a new coup in the two-part season finale. And as much as Wilford gets some of his enemies taken off the table, he's also dealt a couple major blows himself.

With a signal coming from Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) that she's ready to be picked up with the climate model on repopulating the planet, Layton and Ruth bust out of the compost section on Big Alice. They connect with Alex, who realizes her mom was right and that Wilford will doom them all. They work up a new plan with Bess and Co. to take not just Big Alice's engine, but to free up Ben to shift Snowpiercer back on course towards Mel.

Unfortunately, as the coup ensues, Wilford kills Javi, controlling Big Alice so that they bypass Mel. Even with Ben controlling his end, Wilford's thrust with Big Alice leaves Mel stranded at the weather station. Still, Layton's crew recovers and comes up with a backup plan thanks to Alex.

The new plan Alex comes up with is to sever the aquarium section and take Snowpiercer's front end back for Mel. Once Layton's team — Ben, Bess, himself and Alex — can head off, they'll pick Mel up, use her data and get word back to the main trains that life can be restarted. This will sway the populace back to them and away from Wilford, but it gets scuppered when Wilford ambushes them at the aquarium.

Thankfully, Josie, with her super-soldier powers, betrays Wilford and crashes the aquarium, allowing it to freeze over. This severs the link, allowing Layton's crew to escape, with Josie joining them. As for their advantage, while Zarah decides to stay in Hospitality for the sake of her and Layton's baby, they're able to knock Audrey out and kidnap her. She's their ultimate leverage as they know Wilford is in love with the former Night Car manager.

Sadly, when Layton and Alex get to the station, they only find the data being heated and protected. In Mel's journal, they discover she died days before, leaving them notes and instructions on how to use the data. She also leaves Alex words of encouragement as she wants her girl to carry on the torch and liberate society from Wilford.

As for Wilford, he'll be waiting on them, planning with hostages of his own. He's got Roche's family, and seeing as Ruth couldn't escape and join Layton, that's another bit of leverage he has. In addition, he can use Zarah and her unborn baby against Layton. The season ends with Layton's mini-train gearing up to head to the main trains as the climate model works, showing there are pockets of heat where civilization can be restarted. Layton declares all-out war, knowing he has trump cards up his sleeve this time.

Snowpiercer stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand and Jaylin Fletcher.
