Stoned Master Kickstarter Puts a Stoner Twist on Kung Fu Comics

Comic creators Aubrey Sitterson and Chris Moreno launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their Stoned Master comic, which promises to combine the best in cannabis and kung fu.

According to a description on the official Kickstarter page, Stoned Master is a planned, five-part series that tells the story of "a burnout martial artist and his friends defending Chavez Heights, Los Angeles from encroaching corporatization and gentrification."

Stoned Master #1 will be a 32-page, full-color comic book. The story will be written by co-creators Sitterson and Moreno, illustrated by Moreno with letters by Taylor Esposito and a logo by Tim Daniel. Sitterson and Moreno first came up with the idea to create Stoned Master while working together on The Comic Book Story of Professional Wrestling.

"We wanted space and freedom for big, intense, outlandish action and hilarious visual comedy," Sitterson explained. "Stoned Master is our opportunity to show off, demonstrating all our strengths through what is -- let's be honest -- probably the greatest concept for a comic book ever."

The co-creators also revealed in a video posted on the Kickstarter page that funds raised as part of the campaign will go toward the printing and shipping of Stoned Master #1, as well as paying the creative team behind the series.

Rewards for campaign donors include physical and digital copies of the book, as well as exclusive stickers prints and a limited number of black-and-white hand-drawn commissions by Moreno. If the campaign exceeds its goal of raising $15,000, extra funds will be used to pay the team at a higher rate and to continue production on the rest of the series.

The official synopsis for Stoned Master reads,

Stoned Master is set in the fictional Los Angeles neighborhood of Chavez Heights, where a rapacious conglomerate is corporatizing and gentrifying everything in sight. And the only ones standing in their way? Burnout kung fu savant Frankie Wong, his drunken master, and his pals from the local cannabis dispensary.

Moreno is best known for his work on the Zombie Dickheads and Civil War: Front Line comic series. Sitterson is known for his work on the BEEF BROS and No One Left to Fight comic books series. The Stoned Master Kickstarter campaign has raised nearly $7,000 since launching earlier this month. The campaign is currently scheduled to close on May 20.
