The Nevers: Bonefire Annie Becomes Amalia's Ally | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Nevers, Episode 3, "Ignition," which premiered Sunday on HBO.

"Bonfire" Annie was introduced in The Nevers premiere as a member of Maladie's gang. Then, in the second episode, Annie used her turn, which enables her to create fire with her bare hands, to save Amalia True's life. After Amalia shot Maladie, Annie prevented Maladie from killing Amalia by throwing a fireball at her. This, combined with one of her visions of the future, causes Amalia to propose that Annie join her and the other Touched at her orphanage in the latest episode, "Ignition." However, it takes more than Amalia's words to convince Annie that teaming up is a good idea.

At the beginning of "Ignition," Amalia and Penance confront Annie, who's now working alone when she attacks the Beggar King's opium operation on the docks. While Amalia initially confuses talking with punching, when she and Penance start bickering, Annie calls a truce and agrees to hear them out.

While Amalia hasn't made the best first impression, she nonetheless points out the Touched are being persecuted and killed in shocking numbers and argues Annie would be safer at the orphanage. Amalia sees Annie differently after she saved her life, and although Annie protests her actions were accidental, Amalia now believes there's more to her than the villain she makes herself out to be.

Despite that, Annie claims she's fine on her own, and given her formidable powers, she may have a point. Either way, Annie means it when she says she isn't interested and slips away as soon as Amalia's distracted.

Amalia believes the issue is settled. However, she hasn't given up on bringing more of the Touched together and, to do so, she amplifies Touched singer Mary Brighton's song across London. The song, which can only be heard by the Touched, offers hope for a better world. Annie, who had already heard the song at the opera, told Amalia she didn't believe in the hope it offers. However, when Amalia and the others return to the orphanage after Mary is violently gunned down as she sang, Annie is waiting for them there -- and she's brought dozens of other Touched people with her.

So it seems Bonfire Annie has joined Amalia's cause, giving her a powerful ally in her mission. And while it's still not completely clear what that mission is, at the minimum, Annie will be a great help protecting the Touched at the orphanage who are less powerful than she is.

Created by Joss Whedon, The Nevers stars Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Ben Chaplin, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Nick Frost, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson and Denis O’Hare. New episodes air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
