Joss Whedon's The Nevers has set a new record on HBO Max for a debuting original series on the streaming platform.

According to Variety, The Nevers premiere on Sunday, April 11 landed 1.4 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max, which includes traditional cable and digital platforms. Viewership is expected to increase as more HBO platforms and telecasts are included. The new record tops other recent original series such as Lovecraft Country and The Undoing.

Whedon, the creator of The Nevers, departed the series in November 2020 amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, stating, "This year of unprecedented challenges has impacted my life and perspective in ways I could never have imagined."

"And while developing and producing The Nevers has been a joyful experience, I realize that the level of commitment required moving forward, combined with the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer," he continued. "I am genuinely exhausted and am stepping back to martial my energy towards my own life, which is also at the brink of exciting change." Whedon followed this statement with thanks to the series' cast, crew and HBO for their work thus far.

However, the filmmaker was also under investigation for his conduct on the set of 2017's Justice League, with HBO later confirming Whedon would not be featured in The Nevers marketing after his alleged misconduct on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
