Wonder Woman 1984 Actor Talks the Film's Lackluster Reception

With the recent release of Wonder Woman 1984 on DVD and Blu-ray, star Connie Nielsen said the multiple delays of its theatrical release spoiled the enthusiasm for the film and altered expectations in a way it couldn't overcome.

Nielsen said, "I think that what happens psychologically is that a lot of movies like that then get into this insecure territory where they're up for a judgment that would not normally have happened. The fact that it was moved so many times, put it under scrutiny that it did not deserve. It also, as a sophomore film, will always be compared to the one before," Den of Geek reported. Nielsen played Queen Hippolyta in WW84, in 2017's Wonder Woman and in Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the theatrical release of WW84 was delayed several times and Warner Bros. opted to release it to theaters and to HBO Max simultaneously, on Christmas Day 2020. Where Wonder Woman received positive critical notice, reviews for WW84 were tepid, and it dropped below the "fresh" threshold on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nielsen, however, said Wonder Woman 1984 is better than its reputation. "A lot of people were so willing to just critique certain elements instead of seeing it as a whole. And I think that as a whole, everything that happens in this film makes a lot of sense. It makes a lot of sense, and I think it’s a beautiful film," she said.

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film is out now digitally and arrived on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD March 30.
