Black Lightning Had Plans for 1-2 More Seasons | CBR

Black Lightning showrunner Salim Akil discussed his plans for a fifth and sixth season for the series, had it not been canceled.

"We’ve always had ideas for a Season 5, or a Season 6," Akil told Deadline in an interview. "We’ve always had places that we want to go. I always plan like that. I never wait; I’m always thinking about the next season. So, we could have gone on to a Season 5."

Akil added that the production team had "had so many stories to tell" due to the fact that "there’s so many stories out there," especially with the recent events in the African-American and Asian communities.

"Stories about love, about negotiating relationships, about negotiating yourself and the powers that you have in the world," he concluded. "What do your powers mean to you? Are you so attached to your powers that if you didn’t have your powers, in some way, you’d feel less than? I could go on and on."

In addition to two more seasons of Black Lightning being planned, a spinoff focused on Painkiller was also in development for The CW, the backdoor pilot of which aired as an episode of Black Lightning. However, it was announced on the day of Black Lightning's series finale that The CW would not be going forward with Painkiller, though the show may go to HBO Max.

Black Lightning stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce/Thunder, Christine Adams as Lynn Stewart, Laura Kariuki as Jennifer Pierce, Marvin "Krondon" Jones III as Tobias Whale and James Remar as Peter Gambi.
