For seven seasons, Brooklyn Nine-Nine told the story of a group of wacky detectives working in the fictional 99th Precinct of the NYPD. While the majority of the main characters were members of the police force, there was one who wasn't. She was Gina Linetti, Civilian Administrator and Captain Holt's assistant. But in Season 1, Gina was also a borderline criminal.
Keeping in mind that the Brooklyn Nine-Nine squad was a madcap group of eccentrics, Gina was somehow the strangest of them all. She had a massive ego and suffered from delusions of grandeur so great, they could have been entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. But Gina was also incredibly intelligent, courageous and loyal to her friends when she wasn't tricking them into drinking cement.
Gina was a main character from Season 1 through 5, then appeared for a few episodes of Season 6 before leaving the show for good. With the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine on the horizon, fans hope that Gina will make at least one appearance before it all comes to an end. Given how much the character changed since Season 1, there's no doubt she's changed even more during her time away from the series.
In Season 1, one of the strange parts about Gina's character was her personality. She wasn't as eccentric and quirky as the Gina fans knew and loved in the later seasons. In those early episodes, Gina was a borderline criminal. Not only did she commit at least one outright criminal act onscreen, but she also suggested one and basically admitted to committing another.
In Season 1, Episode 2, Amy Santiago and Rosa Diaz were trying to complete a case against a major drug dealer. They found a lot of cocaine hidden in his bathroom and took it back to the Nine-Nine for processing. Gina was in the evidence lockup while they logged it in and suggested that they sell some of it to make some cash. It was one of those "kidding, not kidding" kind of moments.
Then, in Season 1, Episode 5, Captain Holt asked Terry Jeffords to help polish his skills as a marksman. This was all a ruse to get Terry recertified and back into the field, with Gina there as a witness. Jake called Gina for help with the Vulture, and she answered the phone with, "Gina's Authentic Stolen Police Badges." The implication of this moment was that she steals police badges from the precinct and sells them on the black market.
Season 1, Episode 16 was the icing on the cake. Holt and his husband Kevin invited the squad to their home to celebrate the Captain's birthday. Gina started the evening by stealing a bunch of scarves. When Jake planned an apology dinner after the party was ruined, Rosa forced Gina to return all of the silverware she had stolen from the Captain's house. Gina also gave them a clock she stole from somewhere else entirely.
This odd criminal aspect of Gina's personality had all but disappeared by the end of Season 1 and never popped up again in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. While still wacky and sometimes even a little Machiavellian, Gina became a more earnest member of the department as time went on. In those early episodes, the detectives of the Nine-Nine should have paid a little more attention to the unassuming threat lurking among them.
