Captain America: Sharon Carter Just Turned Kingpin Into Her Personal Assassin

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Captain America #29 by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Leonard Kirk, Matt Milla & VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leonard Kirk’s Captain America run is culminating as expected, with a final showdown between the Star-Spangled Avenger and the Power Elite. However, Agent Peggy Carter, who now operates as the Dryad, just made an assassination attempt against a member of the Elite that could betray everything that Captain America stands for.

In Captain America #29, the Avenger set out to talk to Aleksander Lukin while The Daughters of Liberty attempted to capture Alexa Lukin and Sin. While Cap rejected a kill order, Carter went behind his back and gave Wilson Fisk the information he needed to coordinate the shooting of Alexa Lukin.

After capturing Baron Von Strucker, Captain America and his allies elect to set Aleksander and Alexa as their next targets. Although two of his allies, General Ross and Sharon Carter, believe that the best way to handle the Lukins is to kill them, the Captain insists that they arrest the villains instead. Unfortunately, the words of the Star-Spangled Avenger did little to sway the feelings of one of his closest allies.

Unbeknownst to her allies, Carter pays a visit to Fisk, the former Kingpin of Crime, who is also seeking revenge on Alexa Lukin for threatening to kill him. Sharon gives Fisk a flash drive that contains Alexa's itinerary, although she coyly claims to not know what he's planning to do with such information. As soon as Carter leaves, Fisk makes a phone call to an unknown party and declares that it is time to make their move, implying that he plans to use the information to enact his vengeance against Alexa.

Later, Winter Soldier and the Daughters of Liberty attempt to capture Alexa Lukin. During the ensuing confrontation, Lukin is shot in the head by a sniper during the confusion, and Winter Soldier receives a message in his coms-link that says that tells him justice has been served. Although the sniper is never seen, the implication is that Alexa's fate was orchestrated by the actions of both Wilson Fisk and Sharon Carter.

While taking out Alexa Lukin could stop the Power Elite once and for all, it could cause more problems than it fixes, especially if Captain America uncovers the role Sharon Carter played in what occurred. This development has the potential to shatter the relationship between the Sentinel of Liberty and his allies, bringing their newfound partnership to an abrupt end.
