Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is poised to be the ultimate crossover movie event of 2022. With so many potential cameos, it remains to be seen how much screen time the Sorcerer Supreme will get for himself in his own sequel. At this point, there are a few big-name cameos confirmed, though there are far more rumored.
With what's been confirmed, the movie is set to be another sensational MCU blockbuster. If any of the rumors end up being true, this movie could very well blow the hinges off of the MCU. With everything being teased by relatively reputable sources, it's surely shaping up to be an exciting adventure that will need a rewatch or two.
17 Rumored: Sam Raimi's Good Friend Bruce Campbell as... Someone
With Sam Raimi at the helm of the second film for Dr. Strange, there is a lot of speculation on whether or not Bruce Campbell will make a cameo. Before entering the fray of the MCU, Raimi directed an excellent take on the Spider-Man character so he is no stranger to the genre, but he became famous through horror.
Most of Raimi's earlier works are considered classics in the horror genre such as the Darkman or Evil Dead franchises, both of which Campbell had a role in. Given the long-standing friendship and business relationship of the duo, fans are expecting Campbell to show up in some capacity during this sequel.
16 Confirmed: Benedict Cumberbatch's Titular Dr. Strange, Obviously
While this isn't a surprise to anyone, Benedict Cumberbatch is set to keep his role as the titular character of the franchise. Dr. Strange has become the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, helped defeat Thanos, and even single-handedly (with the Time Stone) defeated Dormammu of the Dark Dimension.
Given everything Strange has accomplished to date, fans are clamoring to see what comes next for the goateed sorcerer. Considering the plot is heavily suggested to be breaking the multiverse wide open, the potential adventures have MCU fans ecstatic.
15 Rumored: Tom Hiddleston's Loki...Or a Variant of Loki That Is
Marvel Studios' big boss, Kevin Feige, has confirmed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will tie directly into the events of the highly anticipated Disney+ show, Loki. To what capacity remains unclear, but the fact that they tie in together is an exciting prospect for fans.
With the trailers released for Loki so far, fans have surmised that the Loki variant will be assisting the Time Variance Authority in mending the timelines he's created since escaping with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. With similar premises, it's not hard to assume Loki could make another appearance at the Sanctum Sanctorum.
14 Confirmed: Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff aka The Scarlet Witch
After watching the action-packed mystical adventure that is WandaVision, MCU fans are dying to see how and why Wanda ends up in Dr. Strange's sequel movie. With the final end credits scene of WandaVision indicating that Wanda had not only tapped into the deeper potential of her powers but had also searched other realms for her lost children, it makes sense for her to be involved.
Whether or not she is the true antagonist of this film remains to be seen. While there are plenty of enemies to chose for Strange's opposition, a witch that was indicated to be more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme himself would make for an excellent foe.
13 Rumored: White Vision From After the Events of WandaVision
White Vision was an incredible new character introduced into the MCU during the final episodes of WandaVision. During a fight with the mental construct of Vision created by Wanda's connection to the Mind Stone, his original memories were unlocked and he flew off presumably to sort himself out.
Recently, a deleted scene from the final episode of WandaVision has made the rounds and it shows White Vision descending upon the Sanctum Sanctorum, he stops at the signature rooftop window before the scene cuts to black. While there is no official word on this scene from Disney or Marvel, fans would love to see White Vision make another appearance and potentially reconnect with Wanda now that he has his memories back.
12 Rumored: Billy & Tommy Maximoff from Another Reality
With Wanda confirmed, and with White Vision now being rumored, it would make sense for the suburban New Jersey family to reconnect. Combining the end credits scene of WandaVision and the prospect of traveling through a multiverse, having Wanda and Strange team up to rescue Wanda's kids from another universe would be a wild ride.
The boys were shown to have some superhero potential and assuming they retain their abilities if they do appear, they could even play a role in defeating the big bad. If true, this could open the door for other characters fans were hoping to see in WandaVision, such as the real MCU Pietro or the devil Mephisto.
11 Rumored: Introducing The Devil Himself, Mephisto (After Such a Huge Tease in WandaVision)
Fans have heard rumors about White Vision, Billy, and Tommy all making appearances, all characters introduced in the groundbreaking WandaVision series. That series also laid out all of the breadcrumbs to set the stage for the villain Mephisto to arrive at the end.
However, this never happened and some less forgiving fans have turned on Marvel for such a misdirect, despite misdirects being an important part of their marketing history. Using Memphisto in Dr. Strange 2 would give the vocal minority closure, but it would also give one of the absolute worst guys in Marvel the proper silver screen introduction he deserves.
10 Confirmed: Rachel McAdams' Lovable Dr. Christine Palmer
It was a long wait for fans before Marvel Studios decided to announce the return of Dr. Christine Palmer for the second installment of the Dr. Strange franchise. While many fans don't think Palmer got much love in the first film, she probably wasn't supposed to as it was more of an origin story for Dr. Strange.
Now that his character and purpose have been established, this allows Dr. Palmer to play more of a role in the second film. She was instrumental in Stephen's motivations throughout the first film and even saved his life, so having her involved more will only be a good thing.
9 Rumored: Tobey Maguire's Perfect Peter Parker & Average Spider-Man and/or Andrew Garfield's Poor Portrayal of Peter Parker & Amazing Spider-Man and/or Tom Holland's Perfectly Incredible Mix of Peter Parker & Spider-Man
Kevin Fiege himself has confirmed that the second Dr. Strange film will also directly tie into the third installment of the MCU's Spider-Man movies. With the idea of a multiverse already heavily teased in Spider-Man: Far From Home, it would make sense for the next movie to go all-in on this concept.
Marvel has already loosely confirmed that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be returning to reprieve their roles as previous portrayals of Peter Parker for Spider-Man: No Way Home. They have also confirmed that Dr. Strange will be appearing in the third Spider-Man film so having all four of these characters potentially meet up during an end credit scene —much like Thor and Stephen meeting after Dr. Strange before expanding that scene in Thor: Ragnarok— would make complete sense.
8 Rumored: Alfred Molina's Spectacular Doc Ock and/or Jamie Foxx's Energizing Electro
In addition to Maguire's and Garfield's Spider-Man cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it has been confirmed that Alfred Molina will be returning as the classic Spider-Man villain Doctor Otto Octavius, better known as Doc Ock, from the Maguire trilogy.
Electro from the Garfield movies, played by Jamie Foxx, will also be formally introduced in No Way Home. If all three Spider-Men make their way into a Dr. Strange 2 end credits scene, it stands to reason that these villains may appear in the same scene to some degree as the primary antagonists for Maguire's Spider-Man and Garfield's Spider-Man, respectfully.
7 Confirmed: Chiwetel Ejiofor's Mordo, Presumably on a Mission
Mordo will be returning, presumably, to continue to the mission he started at the end of Dr. Strange during his brief end credit scene with Johnathan Pangborn. During their meeting, Mordo unleashed some form of mystic magic that is capable of stripping away the magical energy Pangborn used to walk.
While it's unlikely we'll see Pangborn again, fans may see an additional flashback or actual scenes where Mordo strips the energy from other sorcerers that he deemed unworthy of wielding the power. Seeing him in a showdown against a now fully-trained Sorcer Supreme could be interesting.
6 Rumored: A Spiritual Version of Tilda Swinton's The Ancient One
While the Ancient One was murdered during the events of Dr. Strange, she managed to cameo in Avengers: Endgame when Profesor Hulk went looking for the Time Stone. With the potential coming wars against Mordo, Wanda, and maybe even a greater threat, Strange would need as much guidance as he could find.
With the existence of the Ancestral Plane in Black Panther and the Soul Plane from using the Soul Stone, Dr. Strange could very well have his own way of making contact with souls and spirits. The Quantum Realm may even play a role in an Ancient One cameo.
5 Confirmed: Benedict Wong's... Wong, The Librarian of Kamar-Taj
Wong started out as a stonefaced protector of the knowledge in Kamar-Taj, but by the end of the first film, fans grew to love Wong and his jovial belly laughs. While Wong is no Sorcerer Supreme, he is quite a powerful sorcerer in his own right.
It certainly makes sense for the Sorcerer Supreme's sidekick to return to the fold, though if his role will expand remains to be seen. However, with two or more high-profile global (and potentially universal) threats set to rear their heads, Wong will certainly be of assistance going forward.
4 Rumored: The Powerful Dr. Strange Comic Book Villain Known as Nightmare
Fans have been clamoring at the thought of Nightmare becoming part of the MCU. With the title of the second Dr. Strange film involving the multiverse, many fans have assumed this means that the Nightmare Realm —where Nightmare resides— may become the next part of the multiverse.
Nightmare is a classic Dr. Strange villain who, much like Dormammu, rules over his interdimensional domain with an iron fist. Nightmare is also heavily associated with Ghost Rider in the comics. With all the rumors of a Ghost Rider show coming to Hulu, introducing Nightmare would be an excellent way to tie things together.
3 Confirmed: Newcomer Xochitl Gomez's Miss America
Miss America has been confirmed as part of the Dr. Strange sequel. She was truly a groundbreaking character in the comics. Not only is she a minority hero being Latin American, but she also represents the LGBTQ community being a lesbian. She was Marvel comics' first character to represent both groups.
Miss America is another character that hails from an entirely different dimension known as the Utopian Parallel, which is a reality that exists outside of known time and space. She also has an incredible array of powerful attacks and abilities including opening star-shaped interdimensional doorways. Given her hometown and particular skill set, she will likely be a big part of the MCU going forward.
2 Rumored: Tom Cruise's Iron Man from a Different Earth
Over 13 years ago, when the MCU was first being established and casting Robert Downey Jr. was considered a huge gamble, Marvel had many other big-time actors audition for the role of Tony Stark. One of the actors close to usurping RDJ was Tom Cruise, but luckily Favreau's push got RDJ the role and the rest was history.
While it would be impossible to imagine any other actor as Iron Man in the MCU, the tease of one existing in an alternate universe is a fascinating prospect. Not only could they have Cruise's Iron Man be a repeat cameo, but they could also play around with Fox's X-Men and have them be from Cruise's universe.
1 Rumored: Ryan Reynold's Deadpool May Get to Mingle with Stephen & Wanda
It is heavily rumored that Kevin Fiege wants to get some usage out of Ryan Reynolds as soon as possible. There have even been rumors that they want Reynolds as the next RDJ-type of anchor for the MCU going forward. If any of this is believed to be true, it would absolutely make sense for Deadpool to show up in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as it is poised to be the shining star of Phase 4.
This would provide Marvel Studios with an opportunity to have Wade jump universes in a canonical way that actually makes sense. If the rumors are true, given Ryan Reynold's charisma, he could end up being a hilarious, fourth-wall-breaking, third wheel to Wanda and Stephen's main duo.
