Epic: Modern Family Star Joins Once Upon a Time Creators' New Series

Modern Family's Sarah Hyland has joined the cast of Epic, ABC's fairytale drama pilot.

According to Deadline, Hyland will play Rose, the most princessy of princesses who is about to marry her Prince Charming. However, her happily-ever-after is quickly turned upside down when he has second thoughts, leading her on a new path to an unexpected world.

Hyland joins previously announced cast members Eleanor Fanyinka and Brittany O'Grady. Fanyinka will portray the Seer, "a mysterious and playful figure who can lead you down the path of true love." O'Grady will co-star as Luna, "a fairytale princess made cynical by a broken heart. She doesn't believe in love stories, which is unfortunate because she is about to find herself caught in the most epic one of all — her own."

Described as "a romantic anthology that reinvents fairy tales for a new audience," Epic hails from Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis and former Once Upon a Time writer Brigette Hales. Like Once Upon a Time, the series will take place in the Enchanted Forest and provide a new take on Disney's fairy tale characters. ABC ordered a pilot for the series back in early 2021 However, it is not being considered for the fall 2021 season. James Griffiths will direct.

Hyland is best known for playing Haley Dunphy throughout Modern Family's — which also aired on ABC — 11 seasons. She received numerous nominations and awards for her performance, including wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Teen Choice Awards and Glamour Awards. She also appeared in the 2017 TV film Dirty Dancing and the 2013 Bonnie & Clyde miniseries, as well as Cougars, Inc., Scary Movie 5, Vampire Academy and Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League – Gotham City Breakout.

Horowitz and Kitsis rose to fame writing multiple episodes of ABC's hit series Lost. The two then wrote the screenplay for Tron: Legacy before moving on to Once Upon a Time and its short-lived spinoff Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. They also wrote five episodes of the Birds of Prey series from 2002-2003.

Created by Brigette Hales, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, Epic stars Eleanor Fanyinka, Brittany O'Grady and Sarah Hyland. It has yet to receive a release date.
